I have never been to Mt. Vernon. Would love to see it - that is one big house!
Not really. I just finished reading Paul Johnson's biography of Washington (quite short, but really excellent). After the Revolutionary War and until his death, Washington's MANY economic activities had made him one of the two or three richest men in the nation. On that scale, Mount Vernon is quite a modest home (as Washington was modest, himself).
It is a lovely house that has been lovingly restored. The rooms are painted the colors they were in Washington’s day. I especially like the dining room. Check out the plasterwork.

I was impressed with the six hole outhouse.
It is one of the top 3 spots I like to visit when traveling in that area. It is so beautiful and makes you understand the sacrifice President Washington made, when he could have been home living a wonderful life with few worries.
