I think your post is spot on. I emailed the article to an archaeologist friend of mine, here's what he had to say:
... stripped of innuendo and all that jazz, likely a reasonable enough inference from the data presented...
Sigh...
All cultures in all times have "....had them ever with us." Drawing on my long ago "familiarity" with "our" own Great Plains Indian Cultures of recent past... I recall that even among these fierce warrior societies with their bigtime macho front... there was accomodation for those of "...another persuasion...". I think the Sioux called them "Berdash" (maybe "Berdache" (?) via the French Trappers among them - speaking of which, must have been a dubioius foreign influence to begin with! Just kidding -- old "Mountainman lore"... etc.) ... something like that. They wore women's clothing and tidied up around the tipi every day and set a nice table when the "other half" checked in after a hard day's work and all...
(The Plains tribes recognized a lot of "aberrant" societies or sub-groups: one of most intriguing (to me) were the "Contraries" (as I think they were called...). They did evrything in reverse: they habitually walked backwards, rode backwards, wore their clothing on backwards, sat when others stood, etc etc. - all (or as many as they could devise) of normal human behaviors were performed or done in reverse by them)....

Contraries
Reminds me of a episode of “Red Dwarf.” It is a sci-fi spoof and one time they end up in a time line where existence starts at death and ends in the womb.
The main characters are more or less not affected until one tries to take a dump...

This is a joke, right? It's from Time Magazine, sister publication to Time-Lies-Warner-Turner's Mad Magazine.

Ever heard of physiological psychology?

Most people arent aware that in North America there were gay Indians. There was one depicted in the movie "Little Big Man". And no, the movie title had nothing to do with that fact...

I wonder if these archeologists have ever heard of hermaphrodites?

Maybe the guy was an old medicine man, they didn’t use weapons but did store remedies in jugs.
Really, could’ve been anything. This sort of stuff is pure conjecture based on what they’ve dug up so far and imagination about it.

Maybe he had an unfortunate accident — no soft tissues or their outline have been preserved. OTOH, poofs have been found in all known societies...

Captive, caponized made a eunuch-slave, who later gained some measure of honor, so was buried instead of simply tossed on the midden heap is another possibility. At least the experts have jumped all over the press for misrepresenting the presented findings.

That’s as likely a possibility as any. :’)
