Detroit loses a staggering 25% of its population in a decade
CNN ^ | March 23, 2011 | CNN Wire Staff

(CNN) -- Detroit could probably use another Eminem boost following Tuesday's news that it lost 25% of its residents from 2000 to 2010.

You may remember the catchy Chrysler ad during January's Super Bowl.

To the sounds of a jangly guitar, the rapper drives through the city's gritty streets, telling the viewer, "This is the Motor City and this is what we do."

The spot ends with "Imported From Detroit," a message that may have a new meaning, given the latest census numbers.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Detroit saw its population drop from 951,270 in 2000 to 713,777 last year -- its lowest since the 1910 census.

That tells only part of a classic rise and fall of a city that lost residents to the suburbs and the dramatic decline of the auto industry.

I heard that you can buy a home for 20 bucks. Can you imagine if someone had the money, they could go in there and buy up all the land and revamp Detroit. I think it could be done because hopefully the 25 percent who left Detroit are the worst of the worst and the ones left are the good folks.....wishful thinking I know.

You think having a string of union-controlled democrat mayors and city councils since the 1950’s might have something to do with this?

Nah.....

Build it, and they will come...

Destroy it, and they will leave...

I might be wrong, but somehow think that it is the more decent and more productive that got out of that hell hole. That is for the most part.

My hometown, Rochester, NY has lost 100,000 households in 50 years...and it is a rotten, infested city with no real future.

Holy crap, we’ve lost Grand Rapids.

Actually after much thought I’ve decided that if I had the power to vaporize Detroit or Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo, I would spare Detroit. Detroit may be a parasite but its an indifferent parasite. Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo are demanding, angry, self righteous parasites.

We took in a young guy from Detroit a few years back...he came to Indy for work and then went back home to his family after he made a few bucks. Really nice kid.

The whole situation reminds me of a third world country where we are on the border taking refugees. It's so stinking sad.

"This is the motor city and this is what we do"...really? You suck toe smegma.

The ones that left are mostly the ones that worked for a living and depend on jobs.

It is still not enough. Too many are still suffering stuck in a 3rd World there.
I like a new Chrysler commercial claiming it is ‘exported’ from Detroit. LOL. Do you think since they are ‘exporting’ to America, people from there are immigrants who needs treatment like they are from Somalia or something?

Heard this morning that their population is back where it was around 1910; set back 100 years.

Congratulations democrats. Too bad that the idiots who achieved this great socialist victory are still running things there. We can all hope that they flock to Detroit and leave the rest of the country alone.

There is a line in the GM commercial that says “Imported from Detroit”. That immediately struck me as being the same as imported from a 3rd world craphole, which Detroit is.

FUBO & FAD

I like the part where the mayor wants a recount so he can get more taxpater bucks from the state and federal governments. Send the census workers down to the graveyard - they’re voting there already.

speaking of Eminiem, the next time 8 Mile turns up on cable, sit down and watch just 10 minutes of it and then ask yourself, “Why would anybody stay there?”

I always knew that about Ann Arbor, but am sorry to hear it about Kalamazoo. I have some good friends who grew up in Kzoo.

My most liberal relatives live in Kalamazoo. They’re disgusted with the “racist teabaggers” who infest the rural areas of Michigan.
