There are some issues Democratic Presidents can't seem to win, and gun control is one of them. As a legislator, Barack Obama backed tighter gun laws; as a presidential candidate, he pledged restraint. "I'm not going to take away your guns," he said at a Pennsylvania glass factory in September 2008. He hasn't. Last year the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, citing "extraordinary silence and passivity," graded Obama an F on gun control.
During his tenure, the President has also expanded gun rights by signing laws that allow the possession of firearms in national parks and on Amtrak. And yet, he can't get a nod from the National Rifle Association because those measures were tucked into broader bills Obama liked. "He has a failing record when it comes to gun rights, and that's what our members and gun owners and hunters across the country know," says NRA public-affairs director Andrew Arulanandam. "I also think they don't trust him." (See profiles of 'open carry' gun-law advocates.)
If Obama has disappointed both sides so far, the tragedy in Tucson provides a possible pivot point. Senior White House aides have said the President will address the gun issue sometime soon, though they've declined to offer specifics on the timing and format. Equally unclear is what Obama wants to say or what he thinks political considerations will permit him to. Riled by Obama's decision to duck the issue in his State of the Union address, gun-control advocates are urging aggression. "The President should stand up [on guns]," New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg told MSNBC's Rachel Maddow. "It's one of the issues he can build a legacy on."

I love how they can quote Helmke, McCarthy, Feinblatt, and M.A.I.G., with NOT ONE position coming from a pro-gun source. Typical anti-gun BS hitpiece...
They are pushing it as much as gearing us up for the inevitable gun grab that Obama will make. His people have been saying for two weeks that he will make some announcement and start some form of agenda on it. So they are softening us up on it so it isn’t so much of a shock I guess.
What they failed to mention (no big surprise) is the Arms control treaty that Obama and Clinton (the shemale version) both approved of at the UN and are trying to wrap us up in.
I honestly think the reason he hasn’t gone after them so far is because Guns, Gun safes, ammunition and storage of them are about the only industry that has done well under his administration. And they have done VERY well.
He knows it will be a very lose lose situation for him, especially if he plans on taking guns.
Is there a gun rights ping list?
vesting more power in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF)Yeah, that's what we need. A more powerful ATF.
I guess there's just not enough guns being "walked down" to the Mexicans. We need more ATF agents to assist in that.
Defund the ATF (along with the Departments of Energy and Education).
If the crisis is big enough, he can declare Martial Law and do any damn thing he wants to.
Of course they could build a legacy for being anti-gun. You come out as looking completely anti-American, anti-freedom, and anti-God.
“His people have been saying for two weeks that he will make some announcement and start some form of agenda on it.”
I have not heard “his people” saying it. I have heard various MSM sources saying it. I believe this is like a push pole. If they claim it often enough, they can get him to do it.
“push pole” should be “push poll”
Time is no longer a news organ. Its a far left-wing propaganda organ.
The fact that they are calling for more gun control in the face of Arizona’s recent tragedy is a merely a disingenuous
ploy to advance their agenda for turning American citizens into unarmed subjects of a Marxist State.
As long as people have freedom, some individuals will abuse those freedoms. If you remove them or restrict them every time some lunatic abuses them, you will very shortly have none at all.
Time is more concerned with making resistance to tyranny impossible, than they are in re-electing Democrats.
You are only thirty years late, with that observation. :)
Guess I’m a lot older than you. I was born into a world which still had Republican Newspapers :)
We still have two: Wall Street Journal (but only the opinion page) and Washington Times. :)
Obama - votes present.
As anyone else notice or is it just me. Obama seemingly is letting everyone else do his heavy lifting, while he plays golf, basketball, goes on the campaign trail and vacations.
Obama treats his job as a working vacation. He says, "You, go work on this.." While he takes his American Taxpayer credit card and goes on vacation.
He is stress free. He doesn’t have to make any decisions on his own. He just calls George Soros up and asks him what to do.
That’s sure what it looks like to me.
