Were Tut's treasures damaged? (Egyptian Museum Looted)
MSNBC ^ | January 28, 2001 | By Alan Boyle

Despite the best efforts of the Egyptian army and a human shield, some of the artifacts inside the century-old Egyptian Museum were damaged during a brief wave of looting, authorities in Cairo say. And it sounds as if the damaged goods include treasures from the tomb of Tutankhamun, based on comments from the country's top archaeologist as well as a little sleuthing by archaeologists looking at video footage shot inside the museum.

Margaret Maitland, an Egyptologist at Oxford University in England, matched up shots of the damage with pictures of artifacts from Tut's tomb and said that three gilded wooden statuettes of the boy-king may have been broken off their pedestals. In their original condition, one sculpture shows Tut standing on a boat with a harpoon at the ready, and another shows him astride a panther.

Won’t the people who did it be punished with the curse of the mummy?

I can see the plot for a remake of The Mummy.
Looter breaks into museum steals amulet etc etc.
Foxy student reporter falls under amulet’s spell, etc.
Mummy returns, wrecks havoc on revolution, etc. etc.

See Mubarak Returns!
at a burning theater near you.

I’m going to be wary of such accounts for now. I well remember the tales from Baghdad, that turned out to be propaganda regarding antiquities being looted or destroyed.

Isn’t it kind of ironic? Do you remember the song Steve Martin used to do about Tut and line that he move to Tucson Az?

Why would Egypt want to be reminded of the time when Egypt was a world power, before it went all muslim anyway?

Although the pictures and video are fairly convincing.

Yes, and it wasn’t US forces that were responsible as the reports at the time strained to imply, it was largely attributable to the curators themselves as I recall, with very little destruction and the looting being more of a disappearance from within.

That’s why I mentioned propaganda. I’m getting very mixed signals as to just who the bad guys are in Egypt in this regard, and so it seems wise to wait and see.

If the tales of destruction are accurate you’re correct, it’s the M.O. of Islam.

"I well remember the tales from Baghdad, that turned out to be propaganda regarding antiquities being looted or destroyed."

That's not true. A good friend of mine was in charge of the taskforce that worked for more than a year to reclaim some of the lost antiquities. I hadn't heard anything recently, but a few years ago that had repatriated most of it, but there were still some things missing.

His name is Matthew Bogdanos, and he actually wrote a book about it called Thieves of Baghdad.

I have visited that museum. It is very sad indeed if any of it was looted.

I recently bought a book at a used book store that had over 100 pictures of some of the artifacts found in King Tuts tomb. I had no idea how beautiful and intricate this stuff was. It truly amazed me. The only word to describe it is priceless.

Just visited the Egypt exhibit at the Denver Museum. There are several such exhibits around the country. Perhaps it’s a good thing that so many artifacts are out of Egypt right now.

Yep. We can be that curse. Seems to me it is time we dropped a few nukes on these bastards. Just tell the Moslem Middle East to knock it off or you will get more than you ever bargined for. Simply explain to them that they can have their religion since we do believe in freedom of religion but all this insane activity by them needs to cease or we melt mecca. This country can only take so much sh*t from such a low life group of peoples and maybe it is time to show them we mean business.

This war between Christains and Moslems has been going on for thousands of years it just has not been in the public like has been the last 10 years. It is a semi-well documented war but at times we have been mis-informed and the news readers on television or newspapers have not taken the view point from a religious standpoint. The Moslem peoples certainly look at everything from a religious standpoint. Maybe it is time we end all this bullsh*t and put that tribe of people in their places.
