Charles Krauthammer: Obama’s New Start - Republicans no longer have the wind at their backs.

Obama's New Start
Republicans no longer have the wind at their backs.

Riding the lamest of ducks, President Obama just won the Triple Crown. He fulfilled (1) his most important economic priority, passage of Stimulus II, a.k.a. the tax-cut deal (the perfect pre-reelection fiscal sugar high — the piper gets paid in 2013 and beyond); (2) his most important social-policy objective, repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell”; and (3) his most cherished (achievable) foreign-policy goal, ratification of the New START treaty with Russia.

Politically, these are all synergistic. The bipartisan nature of the tax deal instantly repositioned Obama back to the center. And just when conventional wisdom decided the deal had caused irreparable alienation from his liberal base, Obama almost immediately won it back — by delivering one of the gay-rights movement’s most elusive and coveted breakthroughs.

The symbolism of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” repeal cannot be underestimated. It’s not just that for the civil-rights community, it represents a long-awaited extension of the historic arc — first blacks, then women, now gays. It was also Obama decisively transcending the triangulated trimming of Bill Clinton, who instituted “don’t ask, don’t tell” in the first place. Even more subtly and understatedly, the repeal represents the taming of the most conservative of the nation’s institutions, the military, by a movement historically among the most avant-garde. Whatever your views, that is a cultural landmark...

Never underestimate the ability of Obama to succumb to his America-hating agenda. In the next two years more of his Marxist, black theology hate will evidence itself. The MSM will never acknowledge it however, as they now call him the come-back kid for the minuscle wins he had in the lame duck. It is up to us to keep the pressure up, keep Americans informed, and buck the MSM, as we always do. Go on the threads, esp the East Coast news sources, register, and write opinions every day on the blogs. It is only this way that the rest of normal America will see the real mood about what he is continuing to do to this country. And I have news for Kraut, the big “economic stimulus” he thinks is going to lift this country up—it will do nothing whatsoever to improve any of the present economic conditions. It is just status quo all over again, and Bammy will NOT be seen as the big saviour. Do NOT allow the east coast elitists and MSM to deify him all over again. From what I am reading on all the blogs, Americans hate him as much as ever, and do not see him the way Kraut does.

Republicans had Obama pinned against the wall... all they had to do was drive a stake through his political heart by filibustering everything in the lame duck... but instead they let him up and gave him a few pints of blood for the road.

They may have just handed Obama 2012.

This is the worst I have felt in over a year, and nothing the Republicans can do over the next 2 years is going to fix the catastrophe which just occurred.

Krauthammer is a little too happy about Obama’s successes. Charles never liked the Tea Party Movement and disparaged it until its significance could not be ignored. He is no fan of Palin either. He wants elitist Republicans in charge and in a pinch he would rather the equivalent Democrats rather that the helotry of the Tea Party, or, God Forbid, Palin be in charge.

“Riding the lamest of ducks, President Obama just won the Triple Crown.”

Lamest of ducks? He had overwhelming majorities in the House and Senate, and many of the ones who would normally cross the aisle were freed of that necessity because they LOST to Republicans. The ‘moderate’ democrats in this lame duck session knew they were in the final week of their career - and they were eager to take revenge on the voters!

I agree. Krathammer is the ultimate elitist. Years ago he worked for Carter and Mondale and wrote for the New Republic.

He never has been a conservative. He supports WOT to protect Israel, He is a liberal on social issues.

He thinks the “uneducated” (those who have not attended the best schools) should keep quiet and listen to their betters. From his affected tone to his love of fellow Ivy Leaguers, this guy is a Beltway insider from the start. Why so many brain-dead conservatives swoon over him is beyond me.

People in the beltway just don’t get it.

They may not get it but they've damaged this country far beyond what we think, I'm not so sure that any "voting" will get us back to a decent government. I believe this is the last gasp of a great Republic.

Obama's lame duck session was mostly a tie.

Yes, and it served the worthy purpose of confirming in voters' minds that they absolutely did the right thing on Nov. 2.

Horsesh**, Craphammer. He only got these things passed because of the RINOs in the Senate. Once the new congress is in they had better show some conservative spine or they will be looking for jobs also.

Read the DADT repeal Bill. I did, guess what it is not a done deal yet! There are three or four steps the military must do before the 60 day clock starts. Rewriting regulations takes years, I was involved (on the peripheral) with rewriting two regulations one SECNAV and one OPNAV Instruction. IT TOOK THREE YEARS and they still got it wrong. Both have been in rewrite since they were released. The DoD cannot do this right in 180 days, so they are going to wing it and hope the new conservative Congress does not ask to many questions. If the DoD cannot complete this task within a specific time-line, DADT goes back into force.

Remember only Congress can rewrite the UCMJ. The President cannot remove the military laws against sodomy or same sex activities. The DoD will try to circumvent Congress with regulations that nullify the UCMJ or prevent local commanders from enforcement. Congress needs to tighten the penalties for sodomy and same sex activities, transgender behavior and cross dressing. Chemical or cosmetic alteration to change gender still needs to be a AdSep offense.

Folks, we now have coed single quarters. Your son's and daughters are routinely exposed to casual sex in their quarters because the military cannot stop it. The military has all the problems and then some that you find on the biggest party college campuses. Rape, STDs and affairs just to name a few. Strict penalties for all sexual activity in single quarters benefits everyone.

You will not roll this back, but Congress can hold the militaries feet to the fire, make them enforce the laws on the books. Gates and Traitor Mullens wanted this, now deal with it. Heterosexual white Christian males are fast becoming the most discriminated group in America's armed forces. This repeal hardly helps, but without the white Christian, heterosexual males, the military can not function, go figure!

I don’t think Bambi himself did anything. The Dems realized that the tax thing was going to be wildly unpopular, and their supposed opposition was on the “don’t throw me in the briarpatch” side, because they wanted it and on top of that, the dumb GOP gave them big bucks on the side.

But perhaps dumb isn’t the word. What the lame duck congress was in reality was a festival of revenge. Dems getting kicked out teamed with GOPers who were either getting kicked out or had been heavily opposed (Murkowski, who voted for EVERY Dem bill) and decided to punish the rest of the country while the still could.

Bambi was invisible during all of this and emerged only when Clinton came out to handle things (and believe me, Clinton had probably spent days working the Dems and explaining the program to them). So this was a dying Dem/RINO last gasp stab to the vitals, and both of them were so furious with American voters that they managed to pull it off. They punished us for getting rid of them.

Now, Krauthammer endorses an undocumented sociopathic impostor.
Before, Krauthammer endorsed an undocumented sociopathic impostor.
Recently, misogynist Krauthammer attacked GOP candidates for his
misogynist, shapeshifter, Romney.
Is there any wonder Krauthammer is at NRO?

I agree with you on this.

DADT was a kind of nothing burger but it was a big deal to a very few people.

DADT will be completely forgotten in March of 2011 and there probably will never be blatantly open homosexuals sharing bunks, showers and foxholes.

The thing is more a symbolic thing, one more rung in the climb to total acceptance, eventually marriage. Who’s to say where it will all go but so far they don’t seem to get much of nothing done without cheating through the courts and such.

But to call it a major social thing is to stretch waaaaay far its import.

In fact, Krauthammer’s been making a bit of a nuisance of himself these past few weeks with his constant declarations of Obama victories. Which is not to say that the Repubs didn’t give him way more leeway than he deserved, I do think there’s more to this picture than we know.

Everyone knows this new congress is going to be a bit more, ahem, conservative. In fact, I think that Obama’s going to be back-seated pretty much for the next two years. America’s all busy prepping for the holidays so the congress threw him a few nothing burger bones...DADT and the START treaty. I didn’t like either of them but I think it was a plan, part of a strategy adapted by both the Dems and the Repubs.

Some things would not do. That budget wasn’t going to happen or would allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire. The Repubs doubled-down on that and they would have won. The Repubs COULD have doubled-down on DADT and START and with some proper PR I think the American public would have shrugged over both of these things.

I think the Democrats are a bit sick of this guy and the Repubs know the new calvary ain’t gonna have none of it. The deal was to give Obama DADT to appease his homosexual base....very few folk in the scheme of things and the entire thing means pretty much nothing. As for the START treaty, another nothing burger but hey, someday twenty years from now, if there’s no nuclear war between America and Russia, which there will NOT be, give me a break, then history will point to Obama for negotiating the deal that prevented it.

Obama got where he is via an ultimatum issued by the Black congressional caucus and the Democratic party. The CBC went out and found a perfect guy, half white, half black, what don’t talk in ghetto slang. America was ready to elect such a nice young man, a normal turndown in the economy was hyped as the end of the world, the Repubs had a simply awful candidate...yep, it was orchestrated.

The Dems were told that they either support their guy or they’ll alienate the black population from the Dems. This would be devistating for the Democrats.

It was a case of careful orchestration aided by Soros/World Bank/Arab money added to some American guilt that created the Perfect Storm to elect their guy.

Only their guy is turning out not so good and I’m not convinced they expected him to. They just wanted to try and cover those many years of using the Feds to try and implement a sharing of wealth thing by allowing the totally unable to buy houses they couldn’t afford, to implement socialized health care, the DADT for the homosexuals...yes.

The goal is to put Obama on the back burner for the next two years, let him and Moochelle travel the world and bow to world leaders, and for the Repubs to straighten out the mess. Neither the Dems or Repubs really want America’s first black president to go down in history as such a big failure that he has, indeed, been. So they used the lame duck to throw him a few bones that can be spun as major accomplishments.

In keeping with my theory above, which IS a theory folks, I also believe that the Obamer health care thing will NOT be repealed. I do think it will be dismantled and reconfigured in a manner that makes sense so that it will work better and again, Obamer gets the credit.

We, of course, know that the man was a loser but history is being re-written even as it occurs.

It’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
