Ben Stein, an actor and former White House official, on Monday became one of the few Republicans to defend convicted Rep. Charles Rangel.

Stein wrote in an op-ed that Rangel (D-N.Y.), who was convicted of violating 11 counts of House ethics rules, built a heroic record of service during his four decades and Congress and Army service in the Korean War.

"Just for me, I hope that history will record that a truly great man, Charlie Rangel, a hero of the first rank, was laid low by trivial, no-account matters, censured by people who mostly have no clue of what true courage, fighting, blood and frostbite mean," Stein wrote on CBSNews.com. "Charlie Rangel does know, and to me, he is still a hero."

it's a pity. the wheels have flown off a truly intelligent man as age creeps in, as it will to us all.

From the comments section....funny because it's true.

It seems people have forgotten Stein’s most common form of communication- that, or worse...

"...censured by people who mostly have no clue of what true courage, fighting, blood and frostbite mean..."

Good Lord. That's asinine. By his calculus, Benedict Arnold who had fought with bravery and deprivation in the American Revolution could never do any wrong.

What Charlie Rangel did is, in my opinion worse. He did it for simple personal gain, and in his position of authority, pressed financial demands on the rest of us.

At least Benedict Arnold had an axe to grind, and felt he had been wronged as a motivation to sell out his fellow colonialists. Rangel just sells us out because he is a liberal.

Ben Stein blows with the wind. Others put it more simply and say that he blows.

I would hope that Charlie Rangel would eventually take up residence in the Jim Traficant Memorial prison cell. I won’t hold my breath.

Stein is now and always was a RINO.. He can't make up his whether he is a democrat or a republican like all of them.. All RINOs are in this fix.. He can't see or recognize the polar differences in american political thought.. or he would be either of them..

Many american women are in exactly the situation.. thats why the democrat party is mostly women.. There are many that can't or refuse to make the hard decisions.. Must be they are afraid of being WRONG.. you know... no courage..

So they lick the heels of tyrants and ride the legs of malefactors.. and piss on the Constitution..They are lap dogs.. They need to be taken care of..

Since when did tax evasion become a trivial no account manner? If any of us did what Charlie did, we would be in jail for a long time.

Yea, those were the good old days on FR, back in 1992. I remember it well. Jim Rob did wonders hosting the place before browsers were invented.
