David Axelrod, President Obama's senior adviser and architect of his 2008 campaign, doesn't fear a good political fight. But in his personal life, Axelrod and his wife, Susan, have been fighting a 29-year battle with their first child Lauren's epilepsy.
Their story began when Susan discovered her 7-month-old in the crib, blue and listless. "She was sort of salivating at the mouth, and making a guttural sound" Susan recalls. "I think I was just sort of in shock."
The Axelrods rushed Lauren to the hospital , where doctors told them their daughter was having a seizure.
"It took months after she got sick for someone to say, well, you know what, she has is epilepsy," David told Fox News. "I knew the word, I knew it was bad. But I didn't quite know what it all meant."

Just because your daughter handles it, doesn’t mean everyone does.
I have a friend who has a 20 year old son with constant seizures. He is like a big baby.
Axelrod’s daughter had uncontrolled seizures until they started using keppra. I think she has lots of developmental disabilities due to having uncontrolled seizures for so long.
Axelrod is part of an organization that is raising funds (and awareness) for epilepsy.
It’s actually and okay organization. They are doing lots of research on seizure after TBI to help our military.
My daughter has epilepsy also, and I don’t care if he is a democrat when it comes to this issue. I think his wife is the big one doing lots of work in this area.
Cure is also doing lots of research on SUDEP, and since your daughter has a very high chance of dying in her sleep because she has seizures, I would think you would be more interested in this. I know I constanly worry about my daughter dying in her sleep.
Please don’t! This is one of the few good things Axelrod is doing!!!!!!!!!!!

I heard it last night. Kids were taking cough syrup behind their mother’s backs. So, how does that work?? This doesn’t make any sense at all. These are YOUNG kids. Are you telling me the kids are buying the stuff?? That doesn’t make sense. They’d buy chips first...
It was a very good segment & Mrs. Axelrod is an advocate who has helped raise millions for research. She was was just trying to raise awareness. Tomorrow, Martha visits with Lauren. I don’t like David any more than anyone else but in was interesting to see him in a different light. Now, if the LSM could only be so fair & balanced.........I won’t hold my breath, though.
No, it’s an ongoing battle with epilepsy. It’s something you deal with all of your life.
Axelrod and his wife (along with republicans) are very active in CURE. They are working on trying to cure epilepsy. It’s an organization I support because my daughter has epilepsy.
Axelrod’s daughter had uncontrolled seizures for many years until she tried Keppra, which is a newer epilepsy drug.
No telling how long she will be able to stay controlled with epilepsy. Keppra causes liver damage.
My daughter couldn’t take keppra because she couldn’t handle the side-effects.
certain parts of the cough syrup medication can produce you getting high, thats why kids and teenagers are taking it, it produces a drug hugh.
It can also kill you in large enough doses, wreck your body, and becomes toxic.
Keep it locked away.
The steam from the chicken soup was a big help.
Knock on wood...I haven't had a cold in 20 years but as soon as I feel "different", it's Vitamin C...and honey and lemon.

My daughter has epilepsy, and I would love for there to be a cure for epilepsy!
I like the epilepsy awareness.
Most people think that you get diagnosed with epilepsy, you then start taking meds and it goes away. It’s just not that simple.
Let’s ask the death panel... Does this girl live or die?

I honestly, sincerely wish his daughter the best but this PR effort reeks of politics. Now that the dims have lost big they are trying to gin up sympathy and humanize their “little hitler.”
My daughter’s friend from childhood has a 10 month old child who is being tested for epilepsy. The doctor is wanting to rule out other possibilities but is pretty sure. I’m glad to have found out about CURE. As you know, it’s a frightening time for them.

Making the medicine unavailable did limit the problems associated with it.
I'm curious though - if the medicine is no longer available, why has the number of kids showing up due to usage problems only reduced by 50%? Left overs in the cabinet?
I guess I would have to ask if parents are giving the kids adult medications, as with Axlerod. She stated that she gave her daughter 1/4 of an adult dose.
Since when are they “pulled off the shelves”? They advised that they’re useless (not dangerous), but I see plenty on all our drug shelves.
