MAUREEN DOWD: Nuking the White House
The New York Times ^ | November 20, 2010 | Maureen Dowd

Posted on 11/20/2010 4:52:46 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

You know you’re in trouble when you need Henry Kissinger to vouch for you.

But there was the one formerly known as “The One” sitting at a table with a bunch of old, white, Republican dudes, choosing the most abstruse issue on the agenda for his moment to Man Up.

With Republicans treating the president like a dirt sandwich and Democrats begging the president to throw a knuckle sandwich, Obama drew his line in the sand on telemetry.

The Start arms treaty used to be a chance for American presidents to stare down the Russians. Now it’s a chance for a Democratic president, albeit belatedly, to stare down the Republicans.

The administration dilly-dallied for months on New Start, which should have been a no-brainer, even after it was clear that Senator Jon Kyl was a problem and needed to be cultivated, and even after it was clear that Republicans were on track to grab some power back.

But faced with the treaty’s unraveling, with possible deleterious consequences for sanctions on Iran and supply lines for our troops in Afghanistan, Obama had no choice. Even if the treaty doesn’t much affect our strategic security, it affects the relationship with Russia and our standing in the world. And resetting the relationship with Russia, with his buddy Dmitri, is the president’s only significant foreign policy accomplishment.

Besides, a man who won the Nobel Peace Prize on layaway doesn’t want to be responsible for any loose Russian nukes ending up in the crazy ’Stans.

As Richard Wolffe notes in his new book, “Revival: The Struggle for Survival Inside the Obama White House,” the president drove Rahm Emanuel crazy by spending his first months in office toiling on the details of Start....

Yes, he wrote a pro-unilateral disarmament article in the school newspaper as an undergraduate, IIRC. Surprised?

Mr. Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for the “work” he’d done in his first week or two in office. You missed that story? It was 2009.

Maureen, you forget to tell us what’s so great about this treaty. Surely you don’t think foreign policy is all about politics and personality

You noticed, too.

750 words about the need to ratify the START Treaty. But not one word about why it would be a good idea...

I didn’t say it snarkily enough. I was being facetious. Ms Dowd was engaging in ethnic stereotyping. The left always gives themselves a pass on that kind of thing.

Besides, a man who won the Nobel Peace Prize on layaway.... I don't care who you are...that's a great line, and sooooo true too.

What does she mean by that?

Gee Coldone, what do you think she meant? Do you believe Obama earned the Nobel Peace Prize or do you think the incredibly biased socialist Nobel Committee might have given him the prize just because they expected great things based on his Barrack Husseinedness?

Obama is saying this treaty is absolutely essential to our national security.

How so?

I read an article in Time today that stated that 1 in 5 people in the United States suffer from mental illness.

1 in 5 have mental illness, but not all suffer---some get lucky and get one of the fun ones.

;-)

The headline caused my heart to miss a beat, it’s true — but now I’m with, “No pic of CZJ yet? I’ll come back.”

I’m no expert, but I think this whole start thing is pretty much politics. If W had signed the exact same treaty back in say 2007, every GOP Senator would have voted for it. If Obama had signed the same Moscow treaty that W signed back in 2002 and which every GOP Senator happily supported, none of them would support it today. And vice versa. If McCain had won and signed this new START the GOP would be for it and the dems would be against it.

I mean, where were all these conservatives complaining when W reduced our nuclear arsenal back in 2002? Where were all these conservatives when his father and his SecDef Cheney reduced our stockpile of tactical nukes back in 1991/2?

Doesn’t Maureen understand that’s the whole point of the show? To have your fans vote for you. She dind’t seem to mind when Cowboy and football fans were voting for Emmitt Smith(or Jerry Rice, Warren Sapp, etc...), or when Olympics fans were voting for Apolo Ohno, Kristi Yamaguchi or Shawn Johnson(or Evan Lysacek). Should Bristol tell people not to vote for her?

I could easily have said after 2008 that Barack Obama’s fans have hijacked what’s supposed to be a serious election.

You posted the thread so I thought you'd read the column.

John Boehner skipping the TSA check when "flying with the people"...?

Oh yeah, that. He’s a high government official, so what? Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and hundreds of others don’t go through TSA screening, all the way down to “deputy undersecretary” and even SES levels. Congressman Boehner is currently the House Minority Leader and will be the Speaker soon. Is she obtuse or just selective in her outrage I wonder.
