"On Friday, Seiji Maehara said Tokyo would participate in a broader "strategic dialogue" with the U.S., "cooperating more closely" on policy toward China, North Korea, Iran, Afghanistan and other countries.
"Countries the world over watched how China reacted" to the incident, Mr. Maehara told The Wall Street Journal in an interview on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
China rejected a proposed summit meeting, canceled cultural exchanges and energy-development talks, and warned of economic damage. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao threatened "further action" against Japan if Beijing's demands for the release of the captain weren't met.
On Saturday morning, China's foreign ministry issued a statement expressing "strong protest" and calling on Japan to apologize and provide compensation. "Any so-called judicial procedures conducted by Japan against the Chinese captain are illegal and invalid," a ministry spokeswoman said.
The dispute over the fishing vessel, which was operating in waters that Japan considers part of its territory, comes against a backdrop of concern in Japan and elsewhere about China's growing military power. China's navy, especially, has become stronger and is ranging further offshore, causing some at the Pentagon and in Tokyo to reassess the potential threat posed by China."

Like South Koreans. They hate us until NK reminds them who made their peace and prosperity possible.
Too bad “mommy” is a cross-dresser and China is fast becoming a real tiger.

Japan wants us to protect them. So does SK, Formosa, Israel, Kuwait, Yugoslavia, etc., etc., etc. We’re at war in Iraq, Afghanistan, and want to enforce UN resolutions on Iran. Time to pull in our horns and defend our own borders. We’re going down the drain like England’s world wide empire.
Unemployment is at a record high, yet we have to decipher piss-poor writing by some 12 year old writer, employed by the WSJ? My 9th grade journalism teacher would have kicked our butts had we turned in a news story so poorly written.
“Time to pull in our horns and defend our own borders. Were going down the drain like Englands world wide empire.”
It’s ruining us financially. We can’t defend the whole world or export democracy to people who don’t want it.
Don't you wonder what makes us do it? Follow the money, would be a good start.
Too bad the president of “this aint America” no more has such low or nonexistent American cultural knowledge and respect!
There’s been talk of the “Finlandization” of Pacific countries like Japan. In other words, if the US creates the perception that they’re pulling back, those countries are going to let China take over. Before you say that’s bollocks, tell me how Japan is going to pay for a ramped up military when they are so deep in debt.
Big deal, this isn't half a serious as the Hainan Island Incident was... until Gary Condit took over the news again in 2001.
日本*ピング* (kono risuto ni hairitai ka detai wo shirasete kudasai : let me know if you want on or off this list)
“News” isn’t always news. William Randolph Hearst
famously said:
WHen Frederick Remington, arrived in Cuba to cover the anticipated Spanish-American war only to find therewere no visible signs of war and cabled Hearst for permission to come home,
Hearst reportedly cabled back, ‘’You provide the pictures, and I’ll provide the war.’’
This strategy worked, as the Journal sold more than a million copies during the height of the crisis. The same meme was also featured in a James Bond movie of recent times past.
“Don’t you wonder what makes us do it? Follow the money, would be a good start.”
I know what you’re talking about.
I trust the Japanese FAR more than the duplicitous, f*king Saudis...
chicom bump for later.........

Correct. My cousin serves near AT Red Cloud and his experience is that the Sokor’s hate them, but love em at the same time because they couldnt protect themselves. Ive said this many times here, their objective is to checkmate China, finish Nokor and “protecting” SK is the last things on their minds.

Totally agree. It’s not “isolationist” to say the rest of the world needs to start taking more responsibility for its own problems and its own security, and stop freeloading on our blood and treasure.
George Washington in his farewell address warned us not to get entangled in foreign alliances and problems abroad — it would sap our vitality and freedom of action, financially and in many other ways. He was right.
