In Delaware, GOP should target Dems, not O'Donnell

In 2004, when Coons first ran for the job, he promised not to raise taxes. Since then he has raised taxes not once, not twice, but three times.
Coons inherited a surplus. Celebrating victory on election night in 2004, he said his "top priority would be to continue balancing the budget without increasing property taxes," according to an account in the local News Journal. Yet in 2006, he pushed through a 5 percent increase in property taxes. In 2007, he raised property taxes 17.5 percent. In 2009, he raised them another 25 percent.
Coons wanted to raise other taxes, too. He proposed a hotel tax, a tax on paramedic services, even a tax on people who call 911 from cell phones.
Coons says the increases were necessary because New Castle County, despite its surplus, was saddled with extravagant spending obligations made by his predecessor. "Chris made really tough decisions, and after bringing folks together was able to say that we have to have some level of shared sacrifice if we want to get the county back on track," says Coons spokesman Daniel McElhatton. "He was able to restore New Castle County to fiscal responsibility."
Well, not exactly. In January 2009, Coons warned the county might be headed for bankruptcy.
A few months ago, preparing for the expected race against Castle, Coons sought to pre-empt the tax issue with a frank acknowledgement. "Chris Coons raised your taxes," he said in an interview with Politico. "Absolutely. Guilty as charged, your honor." Coons argued that he had also cut spending by historic amounts to keep the county solvent.

Note that unlike here in Virginia, the New Castle County exec is elected.
Now, this being local government, one has to be careful about how tax increases are defined; the rate is only half the story (a 25% rate increase on properties that were reassessed 30% downward would, in fact, be a tax reduction). So I took a look at the New Castle County website to get an idea of when they do county-wide reassessments.
This is what I found in re Assessments: New Castle County property assessments are based upon 1983 property values.
1983?!?!?!
Truth be told, individual properties get reassessed if there are changes made, and like most northeastern states, Delaware counties are jigsaw puzzles of towns. Still, to have had no reassessment in 27 years?
More to the point, though, this confirms that rate increases are tax increases in New Castle. So, while Coons was County Executive, New Castle County has experienced a 54% overall property tax increase.
Ouch!!
Christine ODonnell by contrast, and for all her faults has not raised taxes on anybody.

Hmm, A bearded Marxist that has brought his county to the bank of bankruptcy.
Campaigning against this marxist should be very easy. People do not want higher taxes and all O’Donnell has to do is run ad showing that this turkey raised taxes multiple times after claiming that he would not do so. Good campaign ads would make O’Donnell’s credibility look like Jesus compared to Coons. If only the Repub party in Delaware could get over the fact that their pet Castle was rejected by the voters.
They've already been proven wrong on the first half of this, let's hope they're wrong on the second half too.
Christine wins I think with conservative turnout, Obama disapprove turnout, high, and style image other things.
Use your asset, Christine. Coons ugly face with a distressed font “raised your taxes” is the same ad Castle could’ve run.
Run a positive campaign focusing on Christine and how loveable she is. Marginalize Coons. Run against Rove. But people who will respond to the phrase “Coons is a marxist” are already pumped up for Christine. They need more. 18-29 single women she should be able to get. And a dippy, standard little “I care” commercial could get them.
She’s already been or will be painted as an extremist.
So our reponse is to call the other guy a Marxist?
Nice spots of her walking her dog, I don’t know. She’s hot, cute, telegenic, whatever. Work with that.
She doesn’t need to do anything more at all to get people to vote for her who disapprove of Obama. Everyone knows that she thought Castle was too liberal. Everyone who knows what a Marxist is knows that she thinks Coons is too liberal.
What was that band called “be your own pet”
The Delaware GOP has been Castle’s alone for 10 years or so.
I would run an ad that Coons is Obama’s and Reid’s boy toy.
“He’s my pet” is a winner.
I was at a meeting where Coons proposed the tax hike and the people were all yelling “Yes, raise my taxes”, as if they were drugged.
Despite what Coons may say about cutting his pay and that of county workers, average wages & benefits (excluding medical & pension, separate line items) went UP.
Also, the tax increase was unnecessary. The county wound up with a SURPLUS, because revenues were deliberately underestimated.
The claim is that she has no agenda. Hows this
1. Cut spending. Eliminate the Dept. of No (Energy), Dept. of Stupid (Education) and Dept. of Slavery (HHS).
2. Cut taxes for everybody. Lower taxes = More jobs = More tax revenues.
3. Close the borders. NO AMNESTY. No more free handouts.
4. Defund the DeathCare act. If you don’t, once people find out that “free health care” ain’t free, there will be mass tarrings.
5. No new spending until debt is paid off. Countries that owe us money; pay up. Debts are still outstanding from Wirld War ONE.
That should be enough for starters.
BTW, Old Joe was in Wilmington denouncing Christine by saying “How is she going to create jobs? She doesn’t know anything about creating jobs?” Note to Stupid:a)Government doesn’t create jobs; b)the same applies to Coons; and c)wasn’t that supposed to be YOUR job?
I agree with her agenda.
She should carry out that agenda starting in January.
If she doesn’t need to mention those things on her agenda, she might not want to.
Puppies. Look. She’s got every single conservative in Delaware. She probably doesn’t have to do anything to keep them. She doesn’t need to keep them frothing with anger at Obama.
She needs to pick up votes now in a blue state. She’s right at Obama’s disapproval.
Make a TV Commercial that shows pretty Christine in hidef. Well lit. Pretty pictures that make Christine look heroic or a fighter for the little guy. What are the political things that 23 year old single females want to hear? Say those things. “I care about America” Wow, that pretty young girl cares about America. So do I. I’ll vote for her.
The reason Christine beat the crap out of Castle is your list. The 23 year old single female does not think about politics much.
That might be what they mean by “moving to the center”. She’s got great positions on the issues. We love her positions. We’re all voting for her.
You don’t use the same arguments to turn out ideological conservatives as non ideological moderates and liberals.
Doesn’t anyone remember how to make some sort of bio spot?
Anyway, honestly, I think the issues part of the campaign is over.
Unless Coons is looking over her record, and thinks that some who don’t like Obama will vote for him instead of Christine for some reason on her agenda.
The people who want to abolish these departments are informed on the issues already. No reason to mention it again. Don’t change these positions. Just don’t mention them.
Single female 18-29. Target them with ads. You want the single female 18-29 to like her and want to vote for her.
Do it with a nonideological ad. Maybe mention taxes and spending. But you know, hope and change, really, run Obamas campaign. Footage of 18-29 year old females clapping after Christine says something innocuous and non controversial.
You mean like this:
She's closing in on 2 million in the first 4 days since her victory.
Go Christine.
Coons inherited a surplus. This needs to become second knowledge in the minds of Delaware voter. answer all that masterbation crap with what is important.
This pic screams for a caption...
FIRE... he hehe fire fire firefire... hehe fire. heheeehahahehehe *cough*
“Yes, Eliot Spitzer & I are half brothers. But he is not a ‘real” Marxist.”
