The Frome Cheese Show claims to be the oldest in the country. And organisers hope its cheese sandwich, costing £110.59, is the world's most expensive.

It was created by Bath-based chef Martin Blunos and is made with cheddar blended with white truffles and sprinkled with gold dust.

There is no current official record for the most expensive cheese sandwich.

Mr Blunos said: "We Brits are known to love our cheese sandwiches and here's one that is fit for the banqueting table. Martin Blunos with cheese sandwich Martin Blunos has applied to Guinness World Records to have the sandwich recognised

"The white truffle fuses beautifully with the West Country cheddar and the edible gold gives it a really special look.

"Washed down with a bottle of Krug what more could you want? - although I can't recommend you share it with your bank manager."

Mr Blunos has applied to Guinness World Records to have the sandwich recognised.

The best part is the mayo made with quail egg yolks.

The most expensive sandwich is the one you buy for your girlfriend and your wife finds out.

If I pay $170.00 for a cheese sandwich I would expect it to do gross things when I wrap it around...

Dang. Can that stuff still be good, or is it another sop for the United Refrigerator Workers Union?

If you look at the ingredients list, you’d see that it’s really a truffle sandwich, with cheese. (The truffles account for most of the cost.)

Hmmmm...when I was a kid I remember them handing out gubmnt cheese. Seeing that pic of that big old hunk ‘o cheese...I wonder what it tastes like? Cheddar, longhorn...Velveeta? I love cheese, even cheap mild cheddar...but something tells me this is more like “cheese product” like Velveeta. Blech...I only tried that a few times, and it tasted like it was made with nylon or polyester. Anyone know first hand?

And the gold dust is cheating by my lights. You add gold dust to anything and declare it “the most expensive.”

I'm a pretty good cook and love lots of odd, gourmet foods...truffles? Not so much. I bought some truffle oil to make a pasta dish with and was NOT impressed. Made it taste musty. Could be my inner peasant revolting. Funny, I figured I'd love it since I like every other weird, expensive thing I've tried. I'm sure it's an acquired taste...but for me, I think I'll save the $170 and buy some nice Italian fontina and a warm loaf of french bread.
