We know you love Windows XP, and you're in good company. Millions of Windows XP users are fans of the operating system, and many depend on Windows XP to run earlier applications and hardware that is not compatible with Windows 7. Windows 7 is designed to be compatible with the most popular hardware and software products you use every day and even though we are ending the sale of Windows XP on October 22, 2010, we still plan to provide support for Windows XP until April 2014.

You've got support for another four years. Enjoy it. :)
I've been using XP since about a year after it was released. I have yet to 'get support' for any part of it from Microsoft or anyone else.
The only problem is see is that the Web and hardware will move beyond.
When XP first came out, I had to replace most of the peripherals -- scanner, printer, etc. Now that I no longer work and use the computer only at home, I am not too worried about 'new' equipment or software. As long as my current ones open web pages, I'm satisfied.

Both Vista, and 7 are perfectly fine to use. Having used and supported both, I'll take Win7 over Vista by a mile.
As I've said before (and above), Win7 is just Vista-Done-Right. But the difference is remarkable, in terms of usability.
IMO, of course. :)

Ive taken the XP on my work machine and make it look like Windows 95 (Its really easy to do). I love it when people try to use my computer and stare at the screen puzzled, especially the wonks and gurus.................. If you REALLY REALLY want to have fun, use a screenshot of a Linux Screen as wallpaper on your Company Windows XP computer.

Microsoft is also playing games with current XP installations. Suddenly, things that have worked for years are starting to mysteriously fail AFTER a Windows Update. I know microsoft plays these games. I caught them at it before. Actually, if you consider the difficulty they face, trying to keep all those hundreds of millions of disparate XP installations working, after 10 years of changes, it's remarkable that they still work at all.
I don't doubt that Microsoft plays those games. But I'd say the vast majority of things that spontaneously "break" have more to do with the individual installation and other applications, than any nefarious activity on MS's part.

Loved XP.
But 7 is a real winner.
Now if someone could just help me get rid of the (false positive?)Conficker worm that MSE keeps reporting, that no other malware software reports.

After the Vista fiasco, Microsoft really has no choice but to support XP until Windows 7 has enough of a track record to encourage cautious IT managers to make the upgrade. Too much risk of “the L word” otherwise....

I see no reason to change OS's until the very end. I've used XP since 2000, and have rarely had problems. In fact, the major computer issues I've had were mechanical ones (bad power supply or the machine just gives up the ghost).
IMO- by the time 2014 comes along, Microsoft will have yet another new and improved memory chomping OS in the pipeline. Hopefully, it won't be like Windows ME or Vista.

I like Win 98. Everything I need it for...works.
If I downgrade (aka "upgrade") to a newer version, there will surely be some applications and software that no longer works. (And, I just hate that.)

I like Win 98. Everything I need it for...works. More power to ya. And I must say, you're not alone -- I have friends and family who still prefer 98.
I try to keep them off the Internet, though. The lack of security is a menace to the rest of us! :)

Another good reason to migrate to LINUX. Dell is still selling XP Pro on machines. With Gates being an Obamaton pro-death panel supporter, when will Ubuntu etc become a poltical statement like the left driving a Prius and tell Bill what we think of him and his company (even though he is out of it in many ways)?
Will this be a way Freepers express their dersire and efforts in "Going Galt"?

Here's an impressive figure for y'all:
As of the end of July 2010, Windows XP is the most widely used operating system in the world with a 54.6% market share, having peaked at 76.1% in January 2007.
Kinda hard to declare XP "dead" with over half of the world still using it!

After using Vista and 7 on 2 computers for awhile, I had to go back and deal with XP on a laptop. Wow it’s a pain, driver problems and the network interface is horrendous in comparison.
Good riddance.

The strength of Win 7 also speaks to the fact that Microsoft can learn from its mistakes, something I once thought they were incapable of doing. Isn't Win 7 really the release version of the Vista beta test?
