An American Airlines flight diverted to Albuquerque Wednesday after a man admitted to lighting some matches in the bathroom of the airplane.
American Airlines Flight 117 was en route to Los Angeles from New Yorks JFK Airport Wednesday when passengers spotted a man walking out of the bathroom smelling of smoke and sulfur.
The 767 was diverted to Albuquerque around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Aviation Police say the man admitted to lighting matches in the bathroom of the airplane, but investigators won't say what the man was trying to light.
Albuquerque International Sunport Spokesman Daniel Jiron says it appears there were no explosives found on board, but he says the FBI is the agency that will release any official information about what was found inside the plane.
Authorities questioned the man for hours and held passengers in the terminal for 6 hours as police, FBI agents, and bomb sniffing dogs inspected the 767.
The plane was finally able to take off for its final destination of Los Angeles around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday evening.
FBI Special Agent Darrin Jones says the man was not arrested and has been released. Jones says it's unclear if charges will be filed. The man's name was not released.

An AA cross-country flight leaving JFK to LAX on a weekday -- does this sound familiar? Does anyone NOT believe Islamists are continuing to check our airline security procedures?
maybe he was just trying to burn off some methane...
Earlier story from Fox:
“The security scare on an American Airlines flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport to LAX on Wednesday was caused by a passenger allegedly smoking, the Transportation Security Administration said in a statement.”

The reporter said he was “of Middle-Eastern descent.”

Clearly that reporter needs more cultural and sensitivity training. Doesn’t he know it’s racist profiling to label someone like that?
Now if it was a Christian male.... then bash away.
lol.. I feel bad for the person that was waiting for the toilet after I used it on our last trip. I bet they wished the odor was matches versus Montezuma’s revenge.
(The NM list is available on my FR homepage for anyone to use. Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the list.)
This is exactly why I avoid flying whenever possible.
Oh please. If you or I went into the restroom on an airliner and lit matches, do you really think they would have any hesitation arresting us? Of course not. This is clearly another one of their little tests of our security. The match-lighter should be escorted out of our country and back to his native or ancestral hell hole.
Probably lit a match to hide the smell. I don’t do it, but I’m surprised at the number of people who do this. What’s wrong with a little air freshener?
Maybe it was another shoe bomber like Richard Reid.
This is at least the second time this has happened. In April a Qatar diplomat was caught smokin in the boys room on a United Airlines flight from Washington to Denver.

“.......it’s unclear if charges will be filed.”
I seem to recall that there’s a large fine for doing what he did.
passengers spotted a man walking out of the bathroom smelling of smoke and sulfur.
“Hmmm.....could it be....SATAN?!?”
The Church Lady.
Muzzies “Testing the system”.
Another test run. Move along folks, nothing to see here.
So now we know that he was either released or is in custody. He is either of Middle-Eastern descent or he isn’t. He was either smoking in the bathroom or we don’t know why he was lighting matches in there. These incidents drive me nuts for the first few days until the smoke clears, so to speak. In the meantime, thanks for the update.
You know, people who do this should be publicly beaten to death. There is ZERO excuse for this kind of provocation.
“Testing...Testing....1,2,3”
