If This is "Recovery Summer," I'd Hate To See "Recession Winter"

President Obama is in Michigan today, begging voters to believe that his economic plans and policies are helping the state, the region and the country recover their economic bearings.

Voters aren’t buying the spin, however, and the White House aide who came up with the slogan which Team Obama is deploying along with the president, “Recovery Summer,” must be a GOP plant.

If this is “Recovery Summer,” I’d hate to see what “Recession Winter” looks like.

“I wish he’d save his money and not come to Western Michigan,” Becky De Wind told the Wall Street Journal. The president was “just swiping a Chinese charge card for [the stimulus] anyway, and my kid’s got to pick up the tab.”

There, in a pair of sentences, is the general judgment on the first half of President Obama’s term in office. Everybody knows what he did –the stimulus, the takeover of GM and Chrysler, Obamacare and now the banking overhaul—and the collective assessment of that agenda is overwhelmingly negative. Even if President Obama was half the communicator he was thought to be, he still couldn’t sell this mess of complexity and hype as a coherent growth policy. It was and remains a set of Chicagoland improvisations –serial deals and payoffs to favored constituencies dressed up in the rhetoric of economic policy, and if you aren’t in a union, you don’t like what happened.

What the president didn’t get done –employment growth, tax relief by extending the Bush tax cuts and a solution to the massive oil spill—loom as failures every bit as devastating as what he and Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid pushed across the legislative goal line.

Which explains why a president who is achieving his agenda is suffering from deep declines in his approval rating. Time finds that 49% of adults approve of the job he is doing. Gallup polled 1547 adults and only 45% applauded the president. Of the adults CBS polled, only 44% approved of Obama.

No wonder Robert Gibbs predicted the loss of the House. These are polls of adults, not registered or likely voters. Among this last grouping –the people who are actually going to turn out and cast ballots—the president’s standing must be of the level to cause the press secretary more than an occasional shudder when he imagines what he will be asked to spin on November 3.

Nancy Pelosi is fairly shrieking “Shut up!” at Gibbs as she sees campaign donors beginning to realize that they had better be on the ledger of the incoming majority’s campaign supporters. MSNBC doesn’t deliver the vote and can’t pay for direct mail or ads. Motivated volunteers and energized bases do that. She has her union troops of course, but they didn’t get card check, and they are worried, as is the entire country, about the roll out of Obamacare by the gang that can’t even figure out where to try KSM after a year.

This is the presidency of over promise and under delivery, and nothing is worse than a politician who pretends to have accomplished a great deal when in fact he’s delivered nothing of consequence and a mountain of debt. As President Obama darts around Michigan and other places of economic woes this week and throughout “Recovery Summer,” he’s carrying not just the burden of near 10% unemployment but also of dashed expectations combined with an inexplicable air of arrogance about his abilities.

It is a political nightmare, and Democrats from coast to coast think they are going to wake up in January back where they were in 1995, but this time with a GOP that won’t blow its second chance.

"If this is recovery summer, I hate to see the recession winter looks like".

Great line from Hugh Hewitt... that can be used as a battle cry in October.

Do I smell a prep thread? I just added water purification tabs and two cases of canned tuna to my stock. I’m going to start stocking canned fruit next. Need the vitamin C to prevent scurvy!

If this is “Recovery Summer,” I’d hate to see what “Recession Winter” looks like.

Just wait a few months when the old Bush tax cuts expire and new 0bama taxes kick in.

The president was “just swiping a Chinese charge card for [the stimulus] anyway, and my kid’s got to pick up the tab.”

Your kid picks up the tab and you'll be facing the 0bamacare death panels, so you won't need that retirement account.

I’m surprised there is anyone left in Michigan to greet him. The number of people I have met this summer that have moved from Michigan to Texas is shocking. And they keep coming. Met a couple yesterday that literally loaded the U-Haul and drove south to find work. They had just arrived and were moving into an apartment in Plano.

I just hope they don’t bring their union/liberal ideas with them.

And to clarify, I’m seeing people from all the bankrupt liberal states - California, New York, but Michigan seems to be overly represented.

This article sums up the reasons why I am convinced beyond the shadow of a doubt that the destruction of the economy is deliberate and Obama is merely the puppet who was put in place to accomplish this destruction. No person can be a big enough idiot to always be wrong because of stupidity. The only one who can make a zero on a four part multiple choice exam is the person who could make a perfect score if he wanted to. I don’t mean to suggest that Obama is a genius who could do a perfect job, far from it, but he would have to get something right by accident sometime unless he is being furnished his answers by a team who collectively know exactly what will do the worst damage.

Obama ain’t smart enough to score a hundred percent on anything, not even at screwing up and no level of stupidity accounts for being wrong EVERY TIME. His administration fails the stopped clock test and the blind hog test.

Of course if anyone can point out some things that Obama has actually done well (from the viewpoint of a rational America loving person) then my theory would be falsified. Anyone care to point out where this blind hog may have found an acorn? No not that ACORN! I am sure you can’t show where he is right twice a day so the stopped clock test is out of the question.

Here’s the problem for Republicans......Cheney said “Reagan proved that deficits don’t matter” and Republicans are calling for zero percent cap gains taxes and more tax cuts as if it’s 1980 again......Bush picked Bernanke-—who made predictions about the economy in 2006 that were wildly inaccurate.....yet he’s the guy whose job it was to provide oversight for banks and lending....

and he raised interest rates over 400% between 2004 and 2006, while predicting smooth economic sailing for 2007,2008,and 2009!~ Why was he reappointed to the Fed?

Bush sent out stimulus checks in 2008—which were matched by Fed rate cuts to 2%...which caused gas prices to soar to over $4 a gallon in Spring 2008...so there went the stimulus and Main st. consumer confidence and the election! Only Jim Kramer (a Democrat) was happy!

Then we got MORE fiscal so-called “stimulus” in 2009 under Obama matched by Fed rate cuts to ZERO...and gas prices rose over a dollar a gallon in the past year to slow the recovery......

Who is going to vote Republican this year when deficits already are high and they want to cut taxes MORE? Not independents.......

Deficits crowd out private investement and drive up the cost of government.....but so too do high taxes on income, savings, investment income, profits, etc.....

Deficits matter because BOOMERS are retiring.......unlike in 1980 when Reagan had no choice and Volcker raised the Fed funds rate to 19% under Reagan.......

It’s NOT 1980 guys....Republicans need to repudiate Bush/Cheney and come up with a credible plan....

the press and Democrats think that supply side economics leads to deficits and Depressions and use history to back them up...so what’s the Republican answer to their charges?

1929....1990.....1998 ...even 2000 followed supply side tax cuts, ...that’s what your enemies are saying......

You need to grow the economy...what most don't realize is that Reagan slashed regulation so much in the ‘80s that DC was a relative ghost town by the early ‘90’s...and it took the Clintons about 4-6 yrs to rev things up again.

There will be no new business in the USA until massive deregulation is accomplished once again. However..the monster recognizes this as well...and the ability of “representative” government to thwart bureaucratic will is in question.

Yes, in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal there was an article about how the economy is expected to “slow” in the second half of the year. Just in time for Christmas. If the economy got any slower it would be in a coma.
