Looking on the bright side, neither Indian nor US taxpayers had to finance an expensive rescue operation for this child, whose parents should lose custody of her immediately for letting her put her life in danger.

I’ll bet she tries again. She was trying to break the record held by her brother. This is a family with more money than sense.

The mother indicated that the effort was rushed because of the advertising sponsorship dollars. If her parent had delayed the trip to the spring, Abby would have been too old to win any type of sailing record. There was no interest from the sponsors if she had turned 17 before the trip ended.

I agree. If only there were some sort of child protection authorities before those selfish pilgrims forced their kids on that rickety sailboat the Mayflower...

I feel very badly for the family of the fisherman who had be rescued during HER rescue. What a selfish, self-serving family she comes from, poor girl.
I think she should be put into child protective custody and given therapy, what a peculiar set of parents this poor child has.

Everyone knows the earth is flat. It's a good thing her boat broke down before she sailed off the edge of the earth.

There was a time when 16 year olds were expected to be completely self-sufficient. Thank goodness we have control freaks like you to protect us.

I am reminded of the 11 year old girl who tried to fly around the world with her dad as co-pilot. She crashed and burned in Cheyenne or Laramie, WY.

After all, putting just one life in danger, while bad, is insignificant to putting 300,000,000 lives in danger.

Really? So letting children put life at risk is grounds for terminating parental rights? Should parents whose teens get driver's licences lose their rights? How about pilots licenses? Fishing licenses? Hunting licenses? Maybe those who let their children solo at sailing on any body of water? Water skiing maybe?
