yup..and you can’t tell me that her parents, who at least had age on their side, didn’t ‘encourage” her with her “free choice”.

“Hey Sweetie, are you sure you want to do this and go ahead?
Cause its ok if we lose all the sponsors and the money and are ashamed. Nobody in the family will be upset cause you couldn’t do this...never mind that we will be in debt or anything.”

Shame on you for your relentless attacks on this girl and her family on multiple blogs regarding this story. Just what is YOUR problem - did her family do something personally to hurt you? Your comments show you are way too obsessed with this girl and her family.

The sponsors told the Sutherlands that they would only pay for the expedition if Amy had a shot at breaking the record.

The sponsors said Abby had to travel at age 16 or there would be no $$$ to fund the excursion (including buying the boat).

Those who condemn this family for raising talented self reliant young adults

Self-reliant? Let's see. She needed sponsors to get the ship and fancy equipment. When caught in a typical storm in the Indian Ocean in winter, she and her parents needed someone to charter a Qantas Airbus to find her and 3 ships to change course to get to her. My. How self-reliant!

Talented? Yeah. She knew how to use the fancy technology that was given to her.

Unfortunately she and her parents didn't use the brains God gave them and she tried to sail the Indian Ocean in winter. Something knowledgeable sailors on FR have said is foolish and so has Ian Kiernan.

Are you one of the Sutherlands advertising sponsors? I thought all of them have gone into hiding.

LOL!! Sounds about right. Her mother already said that the kid left late but if she hadn't gone at all they'd lose the sponsors.

Now they have no boat and probably no sponsors. But they have their daughter thanks to the goodness of others.

Yes... self reliant. Many ventures of this type and in business as well garner sponsorships... some succeed and some fail. That’s life. Of course you can just sit on the sidelines and be a part of the peanut gallery... seems like many here are pretty successful at that... congrats for some of the smarmiest comments I’ve seen on FR for a long time.

I’m not jealous of foolish children that risk others lives. This was an ego trip. She wanted to beat her brothers record. How noble! /s

Thanks for the /s tag - I just about dropped the hammer.

One thing that really bugs me is people who think they know better what I think then I do. No one here can read that girl’s mind, no one here can honestly state “it was an ego trip” as absolute truth. That can be stated as subjective opinion but not objective truth. The truth is it is a subjective opinion to say “it was an ego trip”. So many sacrifice objective rational truth on the altar of judgmental and subjective opinion.

Please help us raise the money necessary towards the cost of towing Abby’s boat Wild Eyes from the Indian Ocean back to the nearest port. Your generous help is greatly appreciately. Every dollar donated will be put towards the cost of recovering Wild Eyes.

Too bad that you don't like common sense. Real sailors don't sail the Indian Ocean in winter. Several freepers that sail have said she was foolish to attempt it.

congrats for some of the smarmiest comments I’ve seen on FR for a long time.

In my post to you, just where did I insult you. Anywhere. A personal attack is all you have to defend your pov?

The sarc tag was for "How noble" only. This was an ego trip. Her mother has stated in interviews that this girl had a sibling rivalry going with her brother Zac that completed his trip and the kid wanted to beat him.

Thanks for the /s tag - I just about dropped the hammer.

Because you don't like my opinion? That's based on info from the family? Are you suggesting that I have no right to an opinion that's contrary to yours and you have the right to "drop the hammer" on posters that you disagree with? Odd pov for a discussion forum.

I’m not surprised. A 16 year old kid would have an emotional attachment to the yacht. It’s comparable to a first car.
