Former presidential candidate McCain battling for his political life against GOP conservative

A serious re-election fight wasn't what Republican John McCain expected when he returned to the Senate after losing the presidency.

But the four-term senator is battling for his political life in a race that embodies the volatility of an unpredictable election year. He's facing former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, a fellow Republican pushing him farther to the right as GOP voters demand conservative purity in their candidates and punish those with ties to the Washington establishment.

Two longtime Senate incumbents have fallen —

If Hayworth wins, can he win the general election?

Yes, as long as McCain doesn't exact revenge by endorsing and actively assisting the Dem.

Of course, at that point, McCain would really be--indisputably, too--a traitor.

Some of you people are beyond help. Need I remind you that less than two years ago, conservatives voted for John McCain for president? Now he’s the devil incarnate? That’s really hypocritical.

Having no logical rebuttal, you of course fail to address the content of my post and instead resort to a personal attack. Noted.

Need I remind you, newbie McCainiac, of this classic FR thread put up by Jim Robinson:

John McCain, you treasonous bastard, I challenge you or any of your traitorous cohorts...

If Hayworth really had the support of Arizona Republicans, he would have millions to spend just like John McCain. You can try to twist it all you want, but the fact is most Republicans support McCain.
Get lost, troll.

I second that motion. The official position of FR and it's Founder is to support J.D. Hayworth, not the stinking traitor McLame. One would think that the McCain ass-lickers would get the hint by now. The fact is, if Sarah Palin hadn't sold out to King RINO McCain, Hayworth might very well hold a substantial lead over McStain. McCain never fought this hard against 0bama, in fact McCain has always reserved his nastiest venom for conservatives, which is why it is up to conservatives to retire the dirty Senator from Arizona and put him out to pasture in Keating Acres where he came from, and where he belongs.

McCain might very well decide to pull a Charlie Crist and run as an independent, knowing full well that if he failed to win re-election, that the 'Rat candidate probably would due to the split between real Republicans (who would vote for Hayworth without hesitation) and RINO voters who McCain is counting on to save his corrupt ass.

McCain hates conservatives so much that he would prefer to see a 'Rat take his senate seat, than to see Hayworth win.

Believe that.

If she hadn't sold out, well, shucks, DeVore might actually have had a chance to fight the RINO Fiorina!

The reason everyone held their nose and voted for McCain in '08 was because the choice was between that senile old goat and a bloody Communist, and we got the Commie in the White House anyway, thanks to McCain throwing the election for him.

The choice between 0bama and McCain was like choosing between botulism and ptomaine poisoning, both of them will make you deathly ill, but with John McPtomaine, you at least stand a chance of survival.

NOW in Arizona, there is a REAL choice between a principled and consistent conservative, J.D. Hayworth, and the liberal-progressive 'Rat by any other name, John McCain.

Give your head a shake, if you are REALLY a conservative, you would support and vote for J.D. Hayworth.

I don't know if he can do that, since IIRC, Arizona has sore-loser laws. (SJB and other Ariz. FReepers could do well to confirm or deny that last part.) But, there are a number of things he can do, including assisting the Dem candidate (a possibility, since the most recent polls show J.D. with a theoretical single-digit lead over potential Dems), defecting to the Dems in the Senate, and attempting to snuff out the Tea Parties by inciting the GOP establishment to go massively "bipartisan" in his last few months in the Senate.

It all depends on how angry McCain is, or will be, when he loses that which he feels entitled to, and how deranged he and his supporters become.

And then Mr. Robinson, most conservatives, and I’m assuming the vast majority here at Free Republic voted for that “treasonous bastard”. Am I mistaken about this?

No you're not mistaken, you just need to re-read my #88 to hopefully wrap your head around a concept that you apparently are not familiar with.

And if you can’t understand it, then get someone to explain it to you.

So in that cutting edge colossal politically brilliant brain of yours, it makes sense that J.D. Hayworth is equal to Barack Obama.

Speechless...

What I’m saying is that some here really need to give some of the harsh rhetoric a rest. If you disagree with McCain, fine, but don’t slander him as a treasonous bastard or traitor or Democrat mole (see most of rabscuttles’s post). The man has a long service record for our nation and is indeed a true American hero. Keep to the issues. And I restate that calling a man all kinds of terrible names and accusing him of treason, then turning around and supporting him is hypocrisy of the highest order.

If JD is so popular, why is he not in Congress?

I mightily hope he wins, but not holding my breath.

Only a person with a small mind or an agenda when come to that conclusion. McCain is simply the better candidate. Sarah, Fred Thompson, Gov. Jan Brewer, and many more have come to the same conclusion. Are they all RINOs?

Obviously you don't know enough about McCain.

He IS a traitor, and his entire demented career is a testament to that fact. His attempted subversion of the First Amendment via McCain-Feingold is proof enough, and there is plenty more where that came from.
