Despite grounding 100,000 flights across Europe , battering a beleaguered airline industry, stranding hundreds of thousands of travellers, disrupting schools and businesses, and giving homes under flight paths their first peace and quiet in decades, the current volcano eruption may be only a teaser of chaos to come.

A far bigger Icelandic volcano, Katla, is tipped to erupt in the coming months, potentially causing much more savage and sustained disruption to industry and society. Eyjafjallajokull erupted on 14 April, forcing European governments to impose a no-fly zone. Each time Eyjafjallajokull has erupted in the past 2,000 years – in 920, in 1612 and between 1821 and 1823 – Katla has exploded within six months.

Iceland's Laki volcano

erupted in 1783, freeing gases that turned into smog. The smog floated across the Jet Stream, changing weather patterns. Many died from gas poisoning in the British Isles. Crop production fell in western Europe. Famine spread. . . . . . .

The winter of 1784 was also one of the longest and coldest on record in North America. New England reported a record stretch of below-zero temperatures and New Jersey reported record snow accumulation. The Mississippi River also reportedly froze in New Orleans.

I always like to bring up the potter as my example. The clay used to make fine China is a nasty sticky blue/gray goop that will stick a car to a road or pull the boot off of an unwary traveler. You don't want in on your cloths and if you are a farmer you sure as heck don't want it in your fields. To be blunt it is crud.

But with the knowledge, work, and experience of the master potter the clay can be turned into a vase of incomprehensible value. Yet is there is no difference between the blob of boot sucking clay of the field, and the clay used to make the vase except for the hand of the potter.

The chemicals that make up the human body are nothing special. Spectral analysis shows them to be some of the most common in the solar system, and to also be common on the few exoplanets that have been analyzed. It is not what we are made of, but how we are put together. We are just crud touched and blessed by our creator. But renounce that blessing, or reject that touch and we are just crud. The clay should not be so proud as to take credit for the potters handy-work.

Easier to pronounce was my first thought too.

Thanks to the first Icelandic volcano and rumors of the next one, an annoying relative is now braying that maybe the 2012 predictions are right after all. I thought about cluing her to the Yellowstone Supervolcano just to give her something to really worry about but decided to save that until I needed to keep her really busy.

The Iceland volcano problem could be solved in a heartbeat if we send in the Marines.

We all learned just a few days ago by a Democrat Congressman, so much smarter than us, that if you put too many Marines on an Island, it will capsize. Iceland is an Island.
