2012: Demint or Palin?
Vanity ^ | 4/20/2010 | FTJM

Given the obsession with the 2012 Presidential race and Palin's possible candidacy, who would you choose between Demint and Palin to be the GOP nominee for President at this point? If you'd like to see a ticket of both, specify which one you prefer for President and which one you prefer for Vice President.

Both are great conservatives but I would take DeMint because unfortunately Palin has high negatives among those that are influenced by the msm.

True. She has high negatives because the msm has trashed her,so therefore we should avoid candidates that the msm doesn’t like. Maybe we should just let them pick our candidate.

Demint as President, Palin as Vice President.

Palin is not going to be someone's sidekick again.
She has said so in a Shermanesque statement.

Don't be silly. No matter who the GOP nominee is, he or she will get crucified. Palin has at least been through the fire and everyone knows everything about her. Further demonizing her would backfire.

True that! However, Sarah is a tough cookie, and don't see her righting any checks to any RINO's. See her now - "You want money???Tell me what it is you have done for America?" The bank would fill, she'd be buying political bullets to thin out the target rich environment of RINO's and keeping the few good ones, and getting a slew of patriots into place.

Talkin bout people like Allen West, a patriot in action!

Do you guys remember the bloody battles fought here over Rudi? I was so against his candidacy that I thought everyone else was, too. I came to FR and got my ass kicked by a bunch of rudy-bots. Most of them are gone because that whole war..

Demint.

Not sure on VP. Perhaps Palin. I’m not sold on her at the top of the ticket, yet.

Demint is a businessman and that’s what we really need right now.

1968 — I don’t remember that. Perhaps it was because it wasn’t considered a “real” try for the Presidency. RR was Governor of CA in 1968, and CA had a long tradition of nominating their Gov. as a “Favorite Son”. They used to do it all the time with everyone voting for him on the 1st ballot and then holding out and delivering all their votes to whomever looked like he would be the winner, all in one fell swoop. Nobody ever expected those favorite son nominations to go any place.

I don’t live there any more, and I don’t think they do that any more. The dates of the Primary have changed too. In the olden days, it was “June Primary”.

Goodness, I was a little kid, but I remember when Earl Warren was nominated as a Favorite Son. Of course, that was before he was appointed to the Supreme Court.

Warren was Dewey’s running mate in 1948.

But, Warren was first nominated for President at the Republican Convention as a favorite son. Then he turned his votes over to Dewey and was chosen as Dewey’s running mate. He was the Gov. of CA at the time. That’s what I mean about the tradition of Favorite Son as it used to be practised in CA. Nobody ever took it as a serious run for the Presidency. It was a device used to hold the votes so that the delegation could do some horse trading.

This is because the entire purpose of party conventons has changed.

Once it was the occasion for a party to get its people together, write a platform and nominate candidates. Today it's the occasion for the party to crown its nominee and start the campaign.

We haven't had a contested convention since the Fifties, thanks to the primary and caucus system. Kind of takes the fun out of the convention.

And that is why favorite sons and dark horses no longer exist.
