I guess we can add Canada as a lost cause. If both of my great uncles, who fought in WW2, were alive today, they would be scratching their heads wondering how the Allied countries turned into such fascist states today.

By believing the myth that the Government actually gave a damn about individuals. No government ever did nor never will. Government was created to do things that individuals could not and would not do themselves. Those limited responsibilities are not enough for an enterprise, like any other enterprise, wants to grow and it has, by promising to do things for us that we could have done on our own.
It is always willing to go above and beyond is duty -- for a price in treasure and freedom.
