Ann Coulter speech cancelled after thousands protest

OTTAWA—Security officials have scrubbed American right-winger Ann Coulter’s speech at the University of Ottawa after a boisterous protest prompted concerns for her safety.

A spokesman for the group that organized the event said there were fears for Coulter’s well-being after about two thousand people gathered outside the venue to protest her presence there.

Coulter is a darling of the U.S. right-wing who uses incendiary language to sell millions of books as well as her syndicated column.

She sparked more controversy during a speech at University of Western Ontario Monday night when she told a 17-year-old Muslim student to “take a camel” instead of a the flying carpet she has previously suggested Muslims use for transportation.

Even before her Canadian tour began, Coulter received a pre-emptive and private caution about the limits of free speech in this country from the provost of the University of Ottawa.

The letter was immediately leaked to select conservative news organizations, with Coulter telling one that the university was “threatening to criminally prosecute me for my speech.”

Is this the only pic of the “protesters”? I hope its just muslims who came to protest.

The comments by the student, Rita Valeriano, spoke volumes about the mindset of the protesters. A sociology and women’s studies student (what a shock), she said the university promised a “safe and positive space for all.” What she means is that she and other students like her want a space where reality doesn’t intrude into their little leftist bubble.

Each protester should be sued for Human Rights violations: They’re supressing free speech.

What was missing was the amount of people with pies in their hands. Here in the States leftist arguments consist mainly of being able to throw a pie at a political opponent.

In Canada we had a spate of "pieing" and then some person actually was charged with assault and found guilty. A nominal punishment though. Seems to be out of vogue now. A criminal record, even on a misdemeanor just is no fun, that is what is feared.

I take the liberty of quoting a National Post columnist from Tuesday Page A12. With Mark Steyn also on the same page and a great picture of Ann at happier times. She is Marnie Soupcoff.

Canadians tend to assume, as Mr Houle does, that they are such infallible judges of what is right that they can helpfully eliminate views that are wrong before they are even uttered. We lack the humility that Americans instinctively possess (Yes, we can be more arrogant than our southern neighbours!).....

The National Post published an unflattering picture of Ann on the front page, as she was speaking the day before. The Post trying to hold on to conservatives though, without them they are dead in the water. Hence, no doubt the great picture of Ann with the Mark Steyn column on page A12. Steyn called the provost of the nasty letter to Ann, a "posturing wanker" (ouch).

Such thin-skinned people. Such frail egos. One wonders if our Canadian friends could even survive if they didn’t have their big American brother to hide behind...

I wonder if Noam Chomsky, Cornell West, or Angela Davis would have any problems trying to speak in Ottawa?

Angela Davis did speak at the U. of Ottawa in February. I'm pretty sure that Provost François "Posturing Wanker" Houle didn't send her a letter warning her not to, oh, say, buy guns for judge killers.

Valeriano, a 19-year-old sociology and women’s-studies student, said later that she was happy Coulter was unable to speak the “hatred” she had planned to>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Slight edit needed:

Valeriano, a 19-year-old sociology and women’s-studies student, said later that she was happy Coulter was unable to speak the* “TRUTH”* she had planned to

Brain dead , brainwashed liberal student, cannot cope with a possible paradign shift.THAT IS THE PROBLEM. Valeriano has proven the case that she is a LIBERAL FASCIST. And the incident proved that liberal fascism is very well developed in Canada, centered on its institutuons of learning.

Yes Canada is seized by liberal fascism as defined very well here:

Photobucket

Canadians REALLY need to read this book.

Will Canada tolerate a fascist movement in its allegedly "free nation?" Canada seems to be tolerating fascism now.

SHAME!

They were called out to violence by the commie in charge of the University. It was not a protest. It was a threat of violence to stop a anti-marxist from speaking on the campus.

I hope for the day when the thousands of these thugs are met by thousands of freedom fighters. See how quickly the situation changes.

Candor7, slow down a sec. These very kind of people have taken over the universities in the States; geez, doesn't Bill Ayers teach at one?

What did the ‘girl’ look like, to you?

A little bit of affirmative action maybe? Violent protests at universities started in the US during Vietnam, didn't they? She is probably the same type of stupid kid. (I've removed the fourth line in this paragraph so I don't get a suspension.)

I am in no way condoning what these idiots did, anymore than you would condone the behavior of Cindy Sheehan. I am simply pointing out that this is a problem us Conservatives share.....the Socialists have taken over the universities.

I love that Ann has hired Ezra to lodge the human rights complaint. ;-)

Yes, they did take over, but NONE of them here in the USA have used force to close down any event at which Coulter appeared.

We are talking sticks , rocks, a 2000 person mob and a very fightened CAPITAL OF CANADA police force. This has never occurred at a Coulter event in the USA.

Of course we have a shared problem in both countries, but because of the weak protectuions of free speech in Canada, the left have been able to use force. If it were a conservative crowd acting this way, the riot police and the Canadian Army would have been called out.

Canada has a VERY serious liberal fascist problem.

I’m a Canadian and the way I see it is Ann Coulter is the victim of free speech. I hope she fights this.

I am so sick of the politically ‘correct’ civil liberty associations, taking away freedom of speech.

If Rahm Emanuel came to the same university, or Jesse Jackson or Rev Wright they’d be able to curse, damn Canada and the USA, proclaim God dead and none of these protesters would say boo. If she were black they wouldn’t have said a word except to call her an Aunt Tom. tsk tsk tsk

Ann, you fight back and charge them with hate speech too.

Canada has a VERY serious liberal fascist problem.

I know.
So does the US.

Thomas Sowell

~snip~

Dispersed among these national shocks were various local and regional shocks, as colleges and universities across the country were hit by student disruptions and violence of one sort or another over one issue or another. Like the ghetto riots, campus riots flourished where the authorities failed to use their authority to preserve order. Instead, academics sought to cleverly finesse the issues with negotiations, concessions and mealy-mouthed expressions of “understanding” of the concerns raised by campus rioters.

Many academics congratulated themselves on the eventual restoration of calm to campuses in the 1970s. But it was the calm of surrender. The terms of surrender included creation of whole departments devoted to ideological indoctrination.

Members of such departments spearheaded the campus lynch mob atmosphere during the Duke University “rape” case, as they have poisoned other campuses in other ways, all across the country.

1968 indeed left a legacy.

How did you change, when , why? what did you believe then as opposed to now?

Born and raised in an union steel town. Most folks lean conservative but follow the Democrat Party line.

To make it short, there came a time when I realized that supporting them meant supporting a lot of what I was against and that caused an epiphany.
