The Danger of Daily Aspirin
Wall Street Lournal ^ | FEBRUARY 23, 2010 | ANNA WILDE MATHEWS

If you're taking a daily aspirin for your heart, you may want to reconsider.

For years, many middle-aged people have taken the drug in hopes of reducing the chance of a heart attack or stroke. Americans bought more than 44 million packages of low-dose aspirin marketed for heart protection in the year ended September, up about 12% from 2005, according to research firm IMS Health.

Now, medical experts say some people who are taking aspirin on a regular basis should think about stopping. Public-health officials are scaling back official recommendations for the painkiller to target a narrower group of patients who are at risk of a heart attack or stroke. The concern is that aspirin's side effects, which can include bleeding ulcers, might outweigh the potential benefits when taken by many healthy or older people.

"Not everybody needs to take aspirin," says Sidney Smith, a professor at the University of North Carolina who is chairing a new National Institutes of Health effort to compile treatment recommendations on cardiovascular-disease prevention. Physicians are beginning to tailor aspirin recommendations to "groups where the benefits are especially well established," he says.

Doctors generally agree that most patients who have already suffered a heart attack or ischemic stroke, the type caused by a clot or other obstruction blocking an artery to the brain, should take regular low-dose aspirin. But for people without heart disease, the newest guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force spell out much more clearly than before when aspirin should be administered.

The guidelines, announced last year, suggest aspirin for certain men 45 to 79 years old with elevated heart-disease risk because of factors like cholesterol levels and smoking. For women, the guidelines don't focus on heart risk. Instead, the task force recommends certain women should take aspirin regularly if...

No, apparently with any tablet you get some irritation event though it is small.

I take one 325 mg aspirin tablet daily.

For those of you who are 55+ I admonish you to do as I do and carry with you a heart attack/stroke pocket sized first aid kit. It is two 325 mg aspirin tablets nestled in foam in a small metal container. Chewing the tablets at the onset os symptoms could save your life.

Make you own from some rugged pocket sized container. Never leave home without it.

I never really believed that thinning your blood with something that eats your stomach lining was that good an idea unless you were pretty high risk for the heart problems.

I have friends with arthritis, I mix gin and raisins for them. They use it daily.

How much gin? How many raisins? Can you give a more specific recipe? With directions for dosage? How long does it take to see improvement? (I have a friend with pretty bad arthritis in his knee -- he doesn't drink, but maybe he'd make an exception!)

About one percent of the population has Von Willebrands disease, what used to be called a blood dyscrasia, but is now just another hereditary disease which causes slow blood clotting. Regular aspirin use is definitely counter indicated.

I take it regularly in large doses for rheumatoid arthritis. For me, it is the bar-none, fastest working, most effective pain relieving, cheapest anti-inflammatory in the world.

Aspirin would require a perscription if it was developed today - we'd be paying a couple bucks a pill ...

Absolutely. I thank God every day for aspirin. While I have other medication for the discomfort that aspirin cannot relieve, aspirin is the basic drug I use. The side effects of high dose aspirin therapy are not inconsequential, but they beat heck out of the DMARDS that have been suggested as replacements.

Yes, I can imagine that Ernest. I posted quite a few times about different variations on this topic. Good for some, not for all.

Count me in. I started taking Excedrin about 35 years ago because I have sinus headaches and arthritis.

Actually, I started with the Excedrin AFTER they had almost killed me with a sinus medication that couldn’t be mixed with a certain antibotic that a doctor had prescribed for me.

No bad effects from the Excedrin yet!

I tell my friends to use a quart size glass jar.

Buy a box of white (green) raisins, usually 15 Oz. Dark raisins will not work.

Put all the raisins in the quart jar.
Pour the gin until all the raisins are covered.

Set aside for 7 days.

After the 7th day start by eating 7 to 9 raisins daily.
Add gin as you need it to keep the raisins covered.

One of my friends has reached the ripe age of 87, she is so much fun. She said she quit counting the raisins and just took a spoon full. She is pain free. Before the remedy she was in so much pain, this winter we have been so cold and her pain has not returned.

Alka Seltzer contains 325 mg of aspirin, the same as one tablet, with each effervescent dissolved in water. The regular packet of Alka-Seltzer (or the generic equivalent) is the same as two tablets of aspirin.
