We got word today from a disappointed professor at Irvines Brandman University that Republican Senate hopeful Carly Fiorina said no to participating in a debate the school is putting together in cooperation with KOCE-TV.
The other two candidates in the GOP primary former Rep. Tom Campbell and Irvine Assemblyman Chuck DeVore had accepted the invitation for the March 30 face-off. The three are vying to take on three-term incumbent Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer.
But in an e-mail .. Fiorinas campaign manager, Marty Wilson, declined. We have accepted an invitation from ABC Television and the League of Women Voters for a primary debate in early May, Wilson wrote.
Its not clear why a May debate precludes one in Orange County in March. Ive asked Wilson to clarify his e-mail and will update this post if I hear back from him.
UPDATE: Just talked to Wilson and he said Fiorina would be happy to participate in an Orange Couty forum but the dates Moodian suggested just didnt fit into her schedule.
We are very disappointed, Moodian said, adding he is not sure whether the debate will go ahead without Fiorina. Brandman sponsored a gubernatorial debate last fall where then governor candidate Campbell faced off against Steve Poizner even after Meg Whitman declined to participate.
I suppose this means that Carly Fiorinas strategy will be to release bizarre commercials while avoiding to face the other candidates in a public forum, Moodian said. This is a critical election. Ms. Fiorina would like to be the GOP nominee for Barbara Boxers U.S. Senate seat, yet she refuses to come to Americas most Republican county to debate the issues.
Fiornia also demurred when state GOP Chairman Ron Nehring was attempting to put together a Senate candidate debate for this springs California Republican Party convention. ..

Who is Diorina and why is she doing that to O.C?
Or am I lysdexic?
“Ms. Fiorina would like to be the GOP nominee for Barbara Boxers U.S. Senate seat, yet she refuses to come to Americas most Republican county to debate the issues.
Isn’t she a RINO?
I never thought I would support Carly Fiorina for anything, but if’e she’s running against Boxer, I’m for her, just on general principles.
What do you learn from a debate?
Who can think the quickest on their feet? Who knows how to avoid a trick question? Who looks better on camera?
None of those have anything to do with being a good office holder. If you dont’ know everything you need to know about a candidate BEFORE a debate, then you haven’t done your homework.
Anyone that bases their vote on debate performance doesn’t know enough to make an informed vote.
Amen
For CA, no she isn’t.
Mostly agree, although good communication skills are a plus and poor ones a minus.
What do you learn from slick brochures, radio ads, and television ads? You get superficial images the candidates (and their handlers) with the mega-bucks want to show us.
Can’t have pesky little debates peel off the empty-suited rhetoric of those seeking high offices, or can we?
First things first, Carly is running against Tom Campbell and Chuck DeVore in the Republican primary, so you need not have to vote for the empty-suited Carly Fiorina.
And before that to Lucent, one of the most innovative companies in history.
If Orange County is America’s most Republican county, how do you explain Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez?
