Newser) – Moderate Mark Kirk has won Illinois’ Republican Senate primary, blowing away two conservative opponents backed by tea-party contingents. The congressman has 56% of the vote with more than 82% of precincts reporting—giving him a 37% lead over Patrick Hughes. Analysts predicted that a clear Kirk victory would take much of the steam out of the tea-party movement.

On the Democratic side, the Chicago Tribune reports, state treasurer Alexi Giannoulias looks close to clinching the nomination, setting up a fight with Kirk for the Senate seat vacated by President Obama.

I have no doubt of that. Patrick Hughes or a candidate like him could still win. There is no great love for Kirk. He didn’t win because people understood who they were voting for he won because he hid from the competition and masked his identity. I think when we look at the results of the breakdown of the Governors race which had conservative candidates with more money it is pretty clear Kirk shouldn’t have won this. He managed to slick his way in. Now I want nothing more than to see him lose and lose badly. We don’t need his seat. We can pick up seats in the South and be happy campers. We don’t need a new Lincoln Chafee in the Senate. I’d like nothing more than to smack the Republican leadership who setup Kirk for the seat in the face like NY 23. I think Hughes could win. I hope he considers it.

He was the machine's candidate and had the backing of liberal state-controlled Chicago newspapers plus name recognition, which appeared to matter more to voters than his liberal voting record.

It would probably be preferrable if the Democrat beats this scumbag Kirk. Personally, I’d rather be stabbed in the face than stabbed in the back. Scumbags like Kirk simply cannot be rewarded.

An independent conservative could blindside the two liberals. But that means grassroots support, money and organization. Brown showed it could be done but it would take a lot of work to pull it off.

You simply ask for the ballot of the party of your choice. But I don’t think deliberate efforts by one party to interfere with the other took place in ANY of the major races. The major ones were too hotly contested and candidates needed all their own people to vote for them rather then sending them over to influence the other party.

Look, Kirk won because he had no real opposition. Stop trying to explain it by some Democrat conspiracy to slate a weak candidate. The Dems would a million times rather have had Hughes than Kirk to run against.

The congressional races in the 8th and 10th (Kirk’s vacated seat) and 14th districts produced good conservative Republican candidates. The governor/lt. gov. races were won by strong conservatives. So now someone says the Combine will deliberately destroy Brady? No! They don’t have that power any more. What will destroy Brady is infighting among conservatives. If the conservatives would just get behind Brady (or Dillard) and back him in unity instead of bickering among themselves he’ll win.

I get so tired of the defeatist attitude I see on FR. Yes, there are plenty of Rinos out there and plenty of bad things have happened.

But some darn good things happened tonight in Illinois. Wake up, take an honest look at the situation. Stop fighting the last war.

Would you vote for Patrick Hughes if he ran as an Independent in November?

I would advise just ignoring this race and spending time and resources supporting conservatives elsewhere.

Don't think he's worth wasting time opposing in the general election.

Probably. But I’m not sure that is the best strategy. We have a strong Conservative slate for governor. Creating a third party movement at this moment instead of trying to do a Reagan grassroots take over and driving a stake through the heart of the Combine ought to be the goal. The Tea Party movement can be a catalyst in this. Putting a lot of energy into a third party only for one race (Senate) would undermine the effort to take over the state party by conservatives. We have an opportunity. We might fail, but we would be foolish not to try. And I don’t see how making the Senate race a three-way race helps. The time to defeat Kirk was in the primary. Accept the fact that he won because the best candidates went for the governorship and go with our strengths.

“Anyone who donates to the RNC will have their money go to this liberal! Give direct to conservatives instead!”

And the RNCC gets really testy when you bring such things to their attention. On a recent conversation with one such RNCC fund raiser, I was scolded for saying I was unhappy about Snowe, Collins and Specter (who was never denounced) and was told that it was the RNC who got Christie, McDonnell and Scott Brown elected. When informing him I will continue to give direct to the candidates, he said .... don’t remember exactly but it was something along the lines of deserving whatever I get and not to blame them, or some such nonsense. He was quite irate by the end of it.

“Although he lost, I pray Patrick Hughes will continue to fight for the great state of Illinois.”

I hope Patrick Hughes runs as an independent...we can deny the Republican Rino still! Heck, we can still write in Patrick Hughes or Pegasus for that matter come election day!

I tell you though as a resident of Illinois who had the opportunity to live in a free state (Utah) for thirteen years...Illinois people suck. Even Republicans here are mostly liberal trash.

He is just horrible. I don’t get it. I know what a moderate is. A moderate is someone who meets you somewhere near the middle. This guy never sees fit to protect the unborn, gun rights, or traditional values. Not once has he stood up, not even in a small token way for causes of liberty for the individual. His only saving grace is he hasn’t been running his mouth off at conservatives as a lot of so called liberal moderates like to. I just could not in good conscience ever help this guy or vote for him. He isn’t even a good fiscal conservative. He opperates like earmark junction and voted to expand government run health care programs over a Bush veto. I wish there was something redeeming. He has a record and it makes John McCain look like Jesse Helms in comparison.

To Illinois Freepers, (other locations too),going forward:

If you live in a precinct with out a committeeman, sign up (it doen’t take very many signatures to get on the primary ballot).

If you live in a precinct where the committeeman is ineffective or not well liked, sign up and run against him/her.

If you live in a precinct where the committeeman is a well liked moderate who is working hard, get aquainted, make friends, and educate them in a friendly way.

This is the way the grass roots can impact who gets to run for every single office in the USA. The number one priority to take back this country should be to get a conservative committeeman is every single precinct.

Then you will be endorsing candidates and you will be replacing the current establishment, and be in a position to help to get good conservative choices on the ballot.

I think it takes 25,000 signatures. The constitution party is running candidates and is currently collecting signatures. It has a lot of slots open.

Well, I agree with most of what you say.

Still, I will NOT vote for Kirk the jerk in November!

A Conservative candidate that can come forward for the November election will get my vote. When the “train-wreck” that is Obama and the demotard party that is becoming increasingly unpalatable to regular tax-paying voters derails this year. A Conservative who dared to run will (I believe) look very Scott Brownish!

I hope the Republican powers that be in Illinois, choke!
It needs to be fundamentally restructured.

Splitting my vote. For the ConservativeRepublican Governor ticket and for a Tea Party ConservativeSenator.

Did I say I would vote for Kirk? I detest everything about him. I just don’t think trying to defeat him via a third party effort is wise. I’d rather concentrate on an opportunity we’ve not had for 30 years. Some good things happened tonight. Why do we have to be such bickering quarreling defeatists?
