Haiti earthquake: confusion at airport hampers aid effort
The Telegraph ^ | January 18, 2010

A leading aid group has complained of skewed priorities and a supply bottleneck at the US-controlled airport.

The Geneva-based aid group Medecins Sans Frontiers said: "There is little sign of significant aid distribution."

The "major difficulty," it said, was the bottleneck at the airport. It said a flight carrying its own inflatable hospital was denied landing clearance and was being trucked overland from Santo Domingo, almost 200 miles away in the Dominican Republic, delaying its arrival by 24 hours.

French, Brazilian and other officials had earlier complained about the airport's refusal to allow their supply planes to land. A World Food Program official told The New York Times that the Americans' priorities were out of sync, allowing too many US military flights and too few aid deliveries.

Restoration of order in Haiti is the top priority.

Can't restore something that's never existed.

I'd say that the US military will likely bring the first sense of order to Haiti since it was a French slave colony.

Lots of containers there. Could be used as temp shelters if rains come.

I don’t know why we took over the airport. Now we will be blamed for everything that doesn’t go right. I’m so sick of the US trying to save everyone else. Let China deal with it, or Germany, the UK.......let them take the blame.

Check yer history. The U.S. occupied Haiti from 1915 through 1934. Haiti has always been a disaster. This week that disaster had a catastrophe....and now it faces its worst threat.....politicians.

How about holding the frack’n “Foreign Nations Association” (aka U.N.) accountable for something other than political corruption and international fraud! If they cannot do the one thing right they are chartered for then get rid of them; oh, here is an idea, exile them to Bahrain or that 5hit H@1e Saudi Arabia and let the filth of Islam figure it out; and we will see what Mohammad has brought that is new.

A World Food Program official told The New York Times that the Americans' priorities were out of sync, allowing too many US military flights and too few aid deliveries.

Many of these "military" flights are cargo aircraft that are ferrying supplies from Gitmo to Haiti and then delivering US citizens from Haiti back to Florida. I think we had several C17 flights land in Central Florida yesterday alone.

As usual a newspaper is flapping its jaws about something it knows nothing about.

What does anyone expect from a slave colony run by despots having the one and only industry of sugar cane; and now has to be underwritten on the backs of the American citizenry, for political gain; so that no disaster will go to waste.

I swear I am not stalking you. You just get to each thread before I do.

I do not think the US should concentrate on ducking blame. Also, I am not a “FEMA” type person, by education or experience. I have been personally involved in no serious catastrophes. The worst so far has been nasty blizzards, and major outages of electricity.

HOWEVER, even if the only clue I got that people were thirsty and hungry was from watching Fox News reporters saying people were dying from lack of water, I believe I might have dispatched helicopters to drop small quantities of water and food from very low heights into gatherings of people throughout the heavily populated areas.

I realize security forces could not have insured distribution was optimal, but if conditions were bad, people could have obtained enough to survive and perhaps avoided the panic.

Seems totally stupid to me that no end point distribution of water and food was made five days after the quake. Seems dumber than Katrina to me.

I agree. I think the problem is our military being ordered to take control of the airport. They are only following orders. I blame the Marxist in chief. He’s busy campaigning, going to birthday parties, trying to save Martha in Mass, and his own as*. He’s cares about Haiti when it’s convenient for him.

I imagine they would be real comfortable (cool) in mid afternoon sun, too. But, hey, can't get rained on!

I spent too many July and August days unloading boxcars of lumber, plywood, sheet-rock, cement, and roofing for that to appeal to me, but you should make your discovery known to the people running things down there.

IMHO, it’s not nearly as bad and desparate as its being out to be.

The power was down, but the conductors didn’t just disappear.

The water supplies still exist, although distribution systems are probably damaged.

The port still exists, although some cranes have been damaged.

Many buildings have suffered structurally, but a good number still stand.

In a socialized world, it is calamity.

In a capitalized world, its an expense, but still an opportunity for the small guy to get ahead with dedicated perseverance.

Full Capacity?

Wow! Looks like some baggage handlers on vacation looking for something to do. Air travel passengers standing 2-3’ apart is confusion, stress? Full capacity?

No wonder the airport employees can’t spot the terrorists. They would have to study a different passenger every 10-15 minutes to keep up with the rush!

I am not a “frequent flier”, but I swear I have never been in a line at an airport with as few people as those.

Where is Lt. Gen. Russel Honore, the no nonsense take-charge guy who turned chaos into normalcy after Katrina?

What is apparent is that there is no one authority person who can cut thru all the BS and that is exactly what is needed right now and preferably a military person.

Don’t know if he is still alive and kicking, but if so, he would get my vote to be asked to go down there and straighten out that Chinese Fire Drill!

The US equipment to rebuild the port arrived today.

The airport is operating much smoother now, thanks to the US.

Thousands more US troops are arriving today to restore order.

No matter what we do, or how much we give, there will always be something for the press to go negative on, and the Brits seem to be leading the howling.

Even CNN is doing a better job of reporting successes, such as 60 pulled out of rubble after 72 hours -- 29 of those by US teams.

America's military, emergency workers, private charities, volunteers and donors will continue to do well what they always do, no matter who the occupant of the oval office may be.

"I don’t know why we took over the airport. Now we will be blamed for everything that doesn’t go right. I’m so sick of the US trying to save everyone else. Let China deal with it, or Germany, the UK.......let them take the blame. "

The sad part is, if we did nothing at all, we'd be slammed for not helping...if we do everything, and anything goes wrong, we'd be slammed for that too.

Foreign aid is a perfect example of why long-term socialism will not work...you give a mouse a cookie, he'll want a glass of milk.

These countries have been given so much, and protected so much for so long by the US, they get beligerent when it's not there on a silver platter.

People who are given a free ride do not develop the skills to watch after themselves.

If WE had such an earthquake here in the states, we'd be pretty much on our own, but WE CAN HANDLE IT. Now, obamam might go crawling with HIS hand out (it's that EEO training and mindset), but we'll take care of our own at the living level of the USA...we always have, and we always will.

I say pull all the planes out of their airport to make Brazil and whomever happy, and airdrop the supplies and let them sort it out for themselves.

The policy for the US is we help those who help themselves...

You can't blame people overwhelmed by communist thinking and government propaganda. They are TOLD the government will rescue them from ALL trouble. They trade freedom for security and end up with NEITHER.

This is the same argument used against private ownership of firearms.

"You don't need to own a firearm because the police will ALWAYS be there to help."

When you see anarchy in a massive, natural disaster, you realize the enormity of the lie that the cops will ALWAYS save you.

The cops will be at home saving their families!

Nobody but YOU can save YOU.
