Fair to middlin - not a great quake, but still respectable.

Japan is accustomed to earthquakes.Even more so than California.I just checked NHK's website and there's no mention of it so it couldn't have been that big a deal for the country.

It was awesome. I haven’t felt shaking like this in at least year. I love these things. Who else here is in Tokyo?

We felt it a little here in Yokota. We are a little east of Tokyo.

considering the epicenter was 200 miles away (ok, 192 but who’s counting), it doesn’t appear to have affected TYO too much..I worked in Tokyo for 11 weeks and once a day you could feel the hotel shake a little..I always had the fear the big one would hit while I was there..

Just finished reading “Yokohama Burning” by Joshua Hammer. It’s about the 1923 quake and subsequent fires that killed over 100k people. Incomprehensible, absolute hell on earth.

It must not be too bad, all I can find is that the trains were halted briefly.

TOKYO – A strong earthquake shook the Japanese capital and surrounding areas Sunday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the temblor, which rattled furniture and walls in Tokyo homes at 7:56 p.m. (1056 GMT) Sunday, the agency said.

The Japanese agency recorded the quake at a preliminary magnitude of 6.9. The United States Geological Survey said the quake was magnitude 7.1 and that it was centered in the Izu Islands some 200 miles (320 kilometers) southwest of Tokyo.

The Japanese agency said there was no danger of tsunami from the quake. It was 1,115 feet (340 meters) below the ocean bed in the waters off the eastern coast of Japan, according to the agency.

The agency said the quake shook Tokyo, as well as the prefectures (states) of Ibaraki, Saitama, Chiba and others around the capital.

As most large buildings in that area will be post 1945 they should all be up to code and Japan has some very strict building codes and can handle very strong quakes. Still a 7.1 can cause major damage and if it was center over Tokyo could have been very serious.
