North Korea Ratchets Up Its Threats
IBD Editorials ^ | June 24, 2009

Nuclear Terror: North Korea's threats have escalated to new levels in recent days. Ordinarily, this might not be a big concern. But it's an unstable regime with nuclear weapons, so we have to be ready to act — and fast.

President Obama doesn't seemed too concerned about the North Korean threat, saying the U.S. has "dotted the I's and crossed the T's" on a potential response to the country's increasingly hysteric provocations. On Wednesday, for example, it threatened to "wipe out" the U.S. "once and for all."

It sounds laughable, since North Korea's military doesn't match up too well with ours. And yes, it could just be routine saber-rattling as we near the 59th anniversary of the start of the Korean War, which ended in a truce.

Still, there are signs of growing desperation in North Korea as family members and the military jockey to succeed the country's ailing totalitarian despot, Kim Jong-Il. This raises the risks for us.

In April, North Korea tested a new long-range Taepodong-2 missile capable of hitting Hawaii and parts of the continental U.S. In late May, it conducted an underground test of an atomic bomb. After both the U.S. and U.N. condemned its moves, the North Koreans stalked out of nuclear disarmament talks and — what else? — again threatened the U.S.

Earlier this month, North Korea suspended its truce with the U.S. — in effect, saying the Korean War has restarted.

Just a week ago, the U.S. detected a ship leaving the North Korean port of Nampo. The Kang Nam is thought to be carrying illicit nuclear material and is being shadowed by the USS John S. McCain, a U.S. naval destroyer.

Kim puts son as head of spy agency

SEOUL, South Korea: Leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Il has put his youngest son in charge of the country’s spy agency as a prelude to handing over control of the country, a news report said Wednesday.

Kim visited the headquarters of the State Security Department in March, along with his 26-year-old son, Kim Jong Un, and told agency leaders to “uphold” his third son as head of the department, the Dong-a Ilbo newspaper reported citing an unnamed source.

Kim also told department leaders to “safeguard comrade Kim Jong Un with (your) lives as you did for me in the past,” the mass-market daily said.

It said Kim visited a college that educates spy agents last month and made similar remarks there.

Pyongyang’s State Security Department is the backbone of Kim’s rule over the nation.

North Korea beat us in the 1950s and they could beat us again. Why because they will fight and we will not. I think Obama will run up the white flag after the first shots are fired.

“North Korea Must Renounce Nuclear Weapons, Obama, Lee Say”
By Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service

SNIPPET: “WASHINGTON, June 16, 2009 – Given North Korea’s bellicose threats, it is unacceptable for the nation to possess nuclear weapons, President Barack Obama said today at the White House.
Obama and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak held a news conference following their meeting to discuss the issue. Obama called North Korea a “profound threat” to stability in Northeast Asia and security around the world.

“We agreed that under no circumstance are we going to allow North Korea to possess nuclear weapons,” President Lee said. “We also agreed to robustly implement U.N. Security Council Resolution 1874. Of course, all the parties will faithfully take part in implementing this resolution.”

North Korea’s record of proliferation makes them incredibly dangerous, Obama said. “They have not shown, in the past, any restraint in terms of exporting weapons to not only state actors but also non-state actors,” he said.

North Korea has abandoned commitments and violated international law, Obama said. North Korea leaders have said that all international agreements – including the armistice that ended the Korean War in 1953 – are null and void.

Obama praised South Korea for its steadiness and resolve, and the two leaders reiterated their commitment to the “complete denuclearization” of the Korean Peninsula.”

“Obama appeals to Australia on North Korea sanctions”
By Hwang Doo-hyong

SNIPPET: “WASHINGTON, June 24 (Yonhap) — U.S. President Barack Obama Wednesday called Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to discuss ways to sanction North Korea under a U.N. resolution adopted after North Korea’s nuclear test last month, the White House said.

“They discussed the North Korea nuclear issue, including ways in which the United States and Australia can work together to ensure full implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1874,” spokesman Robert Gibbs said in a statement.”

SNIPPET: “Obama’s call to Rudd comes amid reports that North Korea is preparing for another ballistic missile launch in defiance of the U.N. Security Council’s sanctions for its nuclear test on May 25, the second since 2006. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said last week that he had directed the deployment of interceptors to Hawaii and Alaska.”

North Korea beat us in the 1950s and they could beat us again...

You can't be serious. We destroyed the North Korean army and settled for a draw with the Chinese after they entered the fray.

Read a little history or do some research.

The following joke was posted on Yahoo yesterday:
Q: Why is Obama going to let the North Korean missile hit Hawaii? A: Because then he can say that THEY destroyed his Birth Certificate! LOL.

Upon posting, comments were made that this was a racist effing joke, that the poster was a racist mother-effer, and that he should get the eff off Yahoo.

I saw no racial component to the joke at all, and it was WAY funnier than David Letterman’s about Sarah Palin’s daughter. What do YOU all think?

Korea didn't beat us in the 50s.

Truman stopped MacArthur because MacArthur wanted to broaden the war since the Peoples Republic of China, PRC, was involved in this war. As the Chinese Army massed at the Yalu MacArther recommned nucs! He was dismissed and once the war had contined for 2 years with little more than back and forth action along the original demarcation line an armatice was signed and for the last 56 years we've had to live with the Kin Il whatever dictators!
