First Lady of glamour: Fashion industry pays tribute to Michelle Obama with top style award

By MAIL FOREIGN SERVICE 16th June 2009

It's official: Michelle Obama really is the First Lady of fashion - and now she has the award to prove it.

[Pics in URL]

The 45-year-old received the honour gong last night over top industry favourites at The Council of Fashion Designers of America's annual awards.

Noting her 'meteoric rise as a fashion icon,' CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg said Obama had 'a unique look that balances the duality of her lives' in her roles as adviser to her husband, President Barack Obama, and mother to their two daughters.

Oh, please! Is this what the world wastes newspaper on? Is it any wonder this “profession” is circling the frigging drain?

This is nuts. Michelle is not glamorous. Looks like fashion will be getting a bit campy over the next 3.4 years. Jackie B. she ain't.

They have GOT to be kidding!! This woman is a fashion disaster. Right down to mis-buttoning of her cardigan in London. The picture I saw today showed her in madras shorts and an ugly top that didn’t go with the shorts. The whole world's Media seems to be sucking up to both Obamas. Disgusting.

Really, this shows the utter depths of obsequious adoration the MSM has stooped to, to say nothing of the entertainment industry. These folks would make Nevada’s whores look respectable.

Good grief!!!

She looks good in 3 of the pics, but the one walking the dog, the one walking with Mrs. Brown (black and white, blue sweater and ever present belt) are just awful-frumpy and accenting her hips.

I do not mean to run her down, but she is NOT a fashion icon.

Sarah Palin can't take a bad pic; not so Michelle.

Diane von Furstenberg and Barry Diller have both gone off the deep end. Don't think they are still together (maybe they are), too bad they could have kept it in the family.

I mentioned this on another thread, but the whole Michelle as beauty icon thing reminds of when Tori Spelling was cast on “Beverly Hills 90210” because her Dad was the producer, even though her horse-face was clearly out of place with the other hot girls.

Bwahahaha! I second that. Now, all we need is video of Zira...ooops...I mean Ursus....ooops...I mean whatever the name is of that naggy horse-faced woman in the White Hut to do that signature ape stoop of hunched over and running without swinging those gangly arms of hers.

your right JoJo, that is exactly what it is. they all feel so much better about themselves as they back pat each other and think “see, see, see....I’m not prejudiced, I like black people, I’m one of the good whiteys”. makes me freakin’ sick.

not that it matters but she and her handlers have the poorest fashion taste in recent history

take it from one who pays for a lot of fashion for several women

a Chanel boucle suit is pretty hard to eff up....maybe I could help her out.

Barry!, wardaddy at your service , it’s the least I can do

btw...fashion mag writers are Mau-Maus as a rule

omg.. every time i see her i try to realize she is not wearing a moo moo.

she has got to be the ugliest and worst dressed first wife ever in the history of this country. truly heinous (yet typically liberal).

if there was ever a time to shave the dog’s butt and teach it to walk backwards... this would be it.

Please do not denigrate Nevada whores in that fashion. Say what you will about their "work" at least there is a certain honesty about it which is more than I can say for Comrade Zero's administration.

It’s just deluded because she is sort of awkward with ungainly long arms, a huge ass without the pleasing Beyonce curves and a harsh face. I mean she’s not hideous by normal standards but sitting next to Carla Bruni she looks like Shaq’s malformed twin in a wig. I think the fashion icon status comes from the fact that women think if she can be a glamour queen, I can be one too.

when she was 18, she met Prince Egon of Fürstenberg, the elder son of a German prince and his first wife, an heiress to the Fiat automotive fortune. Married in 1969 and divorced three years later, the couple had two children, Prince Alexandre (born six months after their wedding) and Princess Tatiana, who were born in New York City. She is now the grandmother of three children. The Fürstenbergs’ marriage, though not popular with the groom’s family because of the bride’s religion, was considered dynastic, and Diane became Princess Diane of Fürstenberg at the time of the wedding, according to the Genealogisches Handbuch Des Adels: Fürstliche Häuser According to Bernardine Morris’s article in The New York Times, Diane von Fürstenberg, then separated from her first husband, had dropped her title from use in her professional life.

At the beginning of the eighties, she had an affair with Alain Elkann, Margherita Agnelli’s ex-husband, then an ex-cousin of her own ex-husband. From those days, she kept an excellent relationship with his children, Jaki, Lapo and Ginevra Elkann.

In 2001, she married American media mogul Barry Diller, with whom she had been involved, off and on, since the 1970s. In 2002, she became a naturalized U.S. citizen.

She is best known for introducing the knitted jersey “wrap dress” in 1973, an example of which, due to its important influence on women’s fashion, is in the collection of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
