I can’t tell if you’re happy about that. The BNP’s win is a defeat for conservatives, because liberals will characterize the conservatives’ win by the BNP’s win. The BNP may share a common goal with (real) conservatives, immigration reduction, but they are a party of holocaust deniers and racists, and even show some sympathy for the National Socialist party of Germany, a.k.a. the Nazis.

As bad as our media is, even they would be pressed to spin a defeat of this magnitude as not a “heavy defeat”.

While a few of the smaller conservative parties are for fighting the Muslim takeover of Europe, the main “conservative” parties there are basically RINO-types. This is true of the Tories, Sarkozy’s party, and Merkel’s party. These parties are mildly conservative on some fiscal issues, and favor spending more on the military, but on social issues they're standard liberal parties. They're just as committed to importing Muslims, to multiculturalism, to the homosexual agenda, to the EU fascist state, to speech codes and hate crime laws, as the leftist parties.

Any party which actually opposes the Islamization of Europe and the EU superstate is demonized, such as the BNP, the VB in Belgium, and Geert Wilders’ party in Holland. It's good that these parties are on the upswing, but they're far from controlling the agenda.

??? Sarkozy won a state wide referendum on hard work, lower taxes, immigration restrictions, making Muslims integrate into French society, downsize the civil service, confronting rioters with force.

Berlusconi just wiped out the Communist Party in Italy. He defeated the Socialists. This was a nation wide referendum!

Conservatives are demonized in the USA. Depends what media you pay attention to.

That's a good point. There really isn't anything resembling American conservatism in Europe. Perhaps the UK and the Swiss have the closest, but they're still wildly different than what we have here.

I like Berlusconi. He's okay.

Sarkozy’s conservatism is largely hype. He's appointed a record number of Muslims and Africans to his administration. Not conservatives, but racial and religious activists. A few months ago he gave a speech where he said that since France had successfully mixed Gauls, Goths, and Franks centuries ago, there's no reason why they can't mix French with Africans and Muslims today. He invoked a difficult to translate French word, metissage, which roughly means race or culture mixing, to call for the creation of a new multi-racial, multicultural French people.

He says he wants to create an “Islam of France”. Basically, this means that Muslims declare themselves to be Frenchmen but otherwise continue as they're doing now. This is one of those “in name only” phony compromises that faux-conservatives are known for.

Sarkozy did a couple of positive things right after his election, but he's been backtracking ever since.

He's created a commission on diversity, headed by a militant Algerian Muslim, which will monitor employers, landlords, and others to make sure they maintain racial balance. Ditto for colleges and other schools. See link below:

Italy is already highly federalized, with regional parliaments./

Also, this does not translate to America, because the Euro's all have proportional representation, a multi-party coalition style of parliamentary government, not the win-or-lose two-party system we have here.

Also, the prime minister can be thrown out on his ear by a vote of "no confidence." Which is why Italy (and France) have changed governments a lot more than Obama voters change their underwear.

Absolutely on the money. Tough to explain to Americans, but there is no Euro country that has our Bill of Rights. Berlusconi might be a Republican if he were an American. Sarkozy? No way.
