Kris Allen wins
May 20, 2009 | vanity

Posted on 05/20/2009 7:24:51 PM PDT by jmaroneps37

Does anyone else think Kris Allen, who was very good won American Idol over Adam Lambert who was great because Red Staters siad "No!" to Lmabert for reasons other than talent? Lambert is the best ever on the show, but I think he was denied because Red State America has had "enough." I hope I'm wrong, just thinking out loud.

I apologize to everyone who didn't know the result before seeing it on this post. It was not very thoughtful and East coast-centric. I just wasn't thinking because it was such a surprise ending. Even Kris said something about Adam as the winner.

Lots of great heavy rock being released nowadays. Check out Mastodon and Isis. Mastodon’s “Oblivion” is being played on some of the more adventurous Active Rock stations - it’s currently at #49.

Also, tons of great Indie rock.

For ease of analysis, I’ll say that Pitchfork’s “best new music”, is the best new music out there, and that “best new music” is actually very good.

If by “rock is dead” you mean “commercial radio rock is amazingly boring”, I agree. If you mean “rock is not as popular on commercial radio nowadays”, I agree. But it’s easier now than ever before, with the internet, to find and download quality rock.

And if you’re saying there ain’t no heavy rock coming out now that’s as good as Zep, I agree. But if you’re a Zep fan, check out Mastodon.

Yeah, and Judas Priest was not discovered through a competition, they wrote their own songs, etc etc etc.

The problem with rock, is that there are no new envelopes to push.

Back in the 70s, rock was constantly breaking new ground, by now, it’s all been done before.

I couldn’t agree more. Adam was definitely my favorite this year(and how great were the performances tonight with KISS and Queen!), but I also liked Kris and am happy for him. This is the first time in the three seasons I’ve watched Idol (seasons 6, 7 & 8) that I liked both of the top 2. I also really liked Allison quite a bit.

They were two such different types.

On stage together, Adam made Kris look anemic and weak and puny. Adam just has an enormous presence.

I see Adam on Broadway doing Phantom or one of those vampire things. He reminds me an awful lot of Elvis,,at times I think he imitates Elvis.

Kris is a singer for a small venue,,I think he is superb but not at the magnitude of Adam.

Both were good. I sort of miss Matt, the bluesy guy, he was my favorite.

I’ve been saying for weeks that the AI would be Kris or Danny. Since Danny was eliminated last week, that left Kris.

Several factors, and I wouldn’t eliminate the opposition of conservatives to his flashiness/nail polish/over the top performances, and that gay thing.

The judges didn’t help him with their relentless fawning ... Americans are contrarians. A backlash was inevitable.

Remember the McFee girl a few seasons back? By the end of the season, AI fans had just had it with her; same with Archuletta last year. It comes down to whose likeability lasts longest.

It was said that 38 million Arkansans voted for him. Smaller, less populated states tend to feel a bond among the population .. that is lost in a place like CA/NY.

Freddy Mercury was a contestant on American Idol?

The point is AI is a not rock, show. AI is fine when it sticks to its core, which is AC.

I cannot accept that rock, which requires authenticity, can result from anything AI.

AI is a lame show, the winners are chosen by people who listen to AC stations and Top 40 stations. Typically middle age women or preteen girls. Not rock fans. I think that AI appeals to gays as well.

This entire process cannot result in quality rock. It can result is mediocre commerical top 40 / rock like Daughtry or mediocre commerical top 40 like Kelly Clarkson or mediocre commerical country like Underwood or Pickler.

Point being, AI gives us mediocre commercial crap which has gotten so much advertising on FOX week after week that it’s bound to be at least somewhat successful.

AI acts ain’t saving anything.

I was surprised to a degree because Adam was pushed as a frontrunner from day one. I think the producers and judges just overpimped Adam too much. I’m not a huge fan of rock, but I thought Adam had a had a good voice and performed well. The thing that got to me was the constant screaming. It was ok occasionally, but it seemed like he did it all the time.

He’ll be fine even though he lost. I’m sure he’ll be offered a record deal by 19E as well and/or other companies. He would have a big future performing on Broadway. He shouldn’t have trouble getting cast.

Kris is a humble, talented, all American guy. He was a dark horse, and I’m glad he won. He has a bright future ahead.

Adam certainly was a musical theatre actor. It looked like he was playing the role of AI contestant. He does have a loud powerful voice and did sing on key. Certainly, fans of musical theatre would have been voting for Adam. If there was a “musical theatre” radio format, Adam’s songs would be popular there. But there isn’t a “musical theatre” radio format. People liked to say that Adam was “rock” but he was acting, and he didn’t lack talent.

Kris is reasonably likeable, reasonably good looking, almost completely inoffensive, and is likely to be singing and strumming an acoustic guitar on a solid, inoffensive record that music directors in a number of formats will accept.

We watched AI this year because we need a break! We keep up with all things political and it gets so damn depressing. And I read constantly and we are Freerepublic junkies. When your sick and in pain so much and your husband lost his job,now going on five months, you need a diversion. It’s nice to see young people going after their dreams. But even AI turned political! Gay versus Christian, like Christians can’t hear what they like or don’t like! Adam and Chris were very different people and styles of artist. I loved Chris’s tone of voice and it was relaxing. He played guitar and piano plus did his own arrangements. Both young men will do well but their fans will be different just like their singing style. I will buy a CD of Chris’s because I liked his voice. Why has this country turned so ugly? When people don’t win or who they think should have won, they get all cry-baby on everyone!!! Boo Hoo

THANKS FOR THE SPOILER! You know we they haven’t shown the winner here in California. Next time please use your brains before spoiling anything for us here in the West Coast.

Lambert is the best ever on the show....

What? No. He has stage presence, and had some fun arrangements. And he can rock. But he edged too much into gay territory at times, too much tongue, too much phoniness, too much screeching. He has mad skills, but sometimes his true gay personality came through ... and normal people like me found that a bit too repulsive.

They were not untalented. Many were quite talented.

What kind of music do you listen to?

Whether the West Coaster click it or not, the title already gave the winner away. I for one click on the thread so I can make a snarky remark to the poster.

I do think Adam’s personal style hurt him with teenage girls; they sensed he was gay and naturally went with the heterosexual guy because he fit their comfort zones better.

Adam appealed the most when he toned down the emo look, like when he sang Tracks of My Tears and Mad World (the first time). I went on the American Idol site and posted suggestions all over the place that if Adam wanted to win he should ditch the eyeliner and the black nailpolish and the earrings and look more conservative. I was attacked by rabid fans of his even though I have no animosity toward him at all and have enjoyed several of his performances.

He got poor advice about how to appeal to teenage girls and that’s the main demographic he needed to reach. Look at the front rows of people on AI and it’s almost always filled with blonde 14 year old girls waving their hands and squealing. Kris Allen was a cutie pie and easier on the eyes than Adam. He has a thinner body and healthier skin. He also has a true humble personality that shines through. When he won he was shocked and said, “This belongs to Adam.”

True class.

Kris Allen deserved to win. He worked really hard and came in from behind and surprised a lot of folks. He appealed to the heartland of America and that is good. Parents wouldn’t want more young people today looking to Adam as a role model if he is gay and starts to be flamboyant about it once the AI stint / tour is over. In some of the pictures I’ve seen Adam would fit in nicely with San Fran’s Folsom Street Fair!
