Lanny Davis: Indict Cheney
Newsmax ^ | May 17, 2009 | Lanny Davis

Posted on 05/18/2009 5:04:09 AM PDT by Captain Jack Aubrey

I have written many times in this space that I oppose any criminal prosecution of prior-administration officials on torture or other issues relating to the Iraq War and the war on terrorism, especially those CIA interrogators who relied in good faith on the instructions of policymakers and the legal opinions issued by Justice Department senior officials. I have agreed with President Obama on the need to look forward, not backward. But I have changed my mind about the need to indict former Vice President Dick Cheney for complicity in illegal torture. [Editor’s Note: Read Lanny J. Davis' columns in The Washington Times. Go here now.] His insistence on putting himself on multiple TV programs and conservative radio talk shows, not only defending torture but offering the defense that it worked, has changed my mind. Not only that -- he went on to attack Mr. Obama as weakening the United States in the war on terrorism because Mr. Obama immediately announced that torture would no longer be allowed. Dem's fighting words. They are also, in my view, reckless and irresponsible. They seem to be laying down a marker that in case, God forbid, there is a terrorist attack, Mr. Cheney can be the first to blame it on Mr. Obama's policies and say, "I told you so." Even more, they seem to be an in-your-face dare by Mr. Cheney to the U.S. criminal justice system: "I am Dick Cheney, I approved violations of the law in the name of the war on terror, and what are you going to do about it?"

Minor point of disagreement: the killings have not started (yet). Perhaps we need to be preemptive!

Yeah, I suppose the other big difference will be the Socialist Democrats will just allow Jews to be massively killed instead of actually doing it themselves.

OK, Lanny... Where’s your “indict Pelosi” piece given the fact that she has falsely accused the CIA of lying to a member of Congress, a criminal offense? And she was apparently also complicit in the torture of detainees... Hey, Lanny, you *sshole! Where’s your next article?

If Lanny Davis wants to play "Third World Dictatorship", we should call "Mexico Rules" on him and his side.

It'll give a new meaning to the phrase "former talking head"...

Just goes to show you that liberal means you never have to stop whining.

The internal polling must show that Cheney is having an impact on the debate.

It turns my stomach to see Hannity get all mushy and buddy buddy with the guy on his radio and television shows.

Make that two of us.

The minute they indict Cheney is the minute all conservatives and Republicans are in mortal danger.

I'll take it as the modern-day equivalent of the firing on Fort Sumter.

Bring it on! I would love to see Cheney put people like Pelosi on the witness stand under oath. The show trial would be an eye-opener for the starry-eyed tree-huggers who elected Obama in the first place. I remember how much young people were disillusioned by the political class when the Pentagon Papers were released.

Lanny Davis isn’t just any flack, he’s the mouthpiece who defended president “depends on what the meaning of is is” who blatantly lied under oath.

And was accused of multiple rapes.

Ad nauseum. His vitriol for Cheney is rendered meaningless by his defense of Komrade Klinton.

The Japanese used water boarding is the talking point of the left.

It has no basis in truth but that’s the beauty of their never ending litany of lies.

The mind numbed robots simply repeat over and over.

Proving once again that the dems are weak on national security.

Always were, always will be.

National defense is a dirty idea to the left. They want that money for prooogrraaaamms.

All during the presidential campaign Obama said that Bush’s policies made us less safe. Now Cheney says the same thing about Obama’s policies and Davis says it’s reckless and irresponsible. Good grief!!

I think it would be a ghastly mistake for the Democrats for so many reasons that it would be difficult to catalog them all. Briefly, though: it would rally and motivate Conservatives like nothing else; it would not merely distract attention from Obama moving his agenda through Congress, but would absolutely poison the already-strained relations in that body and make future retaliation likely; it would make Democrats appear weak to our foreign adversaries who would thus be emboldened to act against our interests; and it would further polarize the nation at a time of great financial distress which will likely worsen this summer.

Help me here, Lanny. Is Cheney guilty of “torture” or merely making your guy look weak in public?
