WASHINGTON -- Michael Steele wanted to rebuild the Republican Party after two crushing national election defeats because he has "a passion for a party I believe in."
"When the opportunity presented itself," Steele said in his office, just blocks from the Capitol, "I saw it as a chance to help take the elephant by the tail and turn it around in a new direction."
That direction is not turning away from principles and values that have defined the party since 1854 but "in a direction that those principles and values can be relevant in the 21st century."
At first, Steele, 50, might seem an unlikely

Agreed
translation: the insiders fear the locals are slipping away.
The tea parties were started WIHTOUT any GOP leadership. They may have helped AT THE END but they were not the vision that started the impitus into reality.
CONTROL THE LOCAL PARTY and you RULE the national party.
Mr. Hip Hop Steele knows and fear this.
Too bad he doesn't have a passion for the ideas the party is supposed to believe in. Supporting the party for the sake of the party alone leads to some very bad things.
As far as I can tell there are two directions. Towards the left or towards the right. Once again, the RNC is trying to be something for everybody. If they aren't walking away from Pelosi/Reid/Obama then they are walking in the wrong direction.

Okay, I said it. I hope it doesn't get pulled.
16th admendment repeal request at the state house level, for one but one more important.
Run for local/state/national office if you are of the Tea party mindset as an independent, since both parties have left us.
Steele fears this too.
This listening tour with all the RINO's is enough to make me puke.
You forgot !^7%$#(*!!!
Palin/Bachmann 2012!!
Go away Steele, you and your minions don’t get it.
The GOP is becoming a liability. The party is a means to an end only. Steel will never really buy into this because he's paid by the party. He's an institutional man.
Conservative Republicans are the grass roots.
Unfortunately the GOP does not listen to the grass roots, well maybe they listen a tad until after they are elected. Then they become so enamored with DC and it's night life, they throw all caution to the wind and start acting like Democrats in order to be part of the DC life and have their faces on TV.
“...principles and values which can be relevant in the 21st century.” And here I thought belief in the founding documents, the rights of the individual and to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness were “relevant” in any century!! Silly me, huh?
1) WATCH GLENN BECK's TV SHOWS (get a copy of last Friday's - it's a MUST see)
2) WHEN IN DOUBT - GO CONSERVATIVE...no REALLY CONSERVATIVE - ASK YOURSELF "HOW WOULD A TRUE CONSERVATIVE ACT/ANSWER ... THEN DO/SPEAK.
THERE...THAT WASN'T SO TOUGH...WAS IT? And, it was only 2 things...not even 3 ;-)
Palin/Bachmann 2012!!
I’ll vote for that.
Why are the Republicans NOT crying foul over the NBC, MSNBC and CNBC connection with GE and the likelihood of “the One” giving GE the contract to build wind turbines. This is bigger than Watergate - we now have a large part of the press joining hands with a political party for financial gain and it is not even being addressed. When CNBC officials are joking that they are being sent to re-education camps we are living in scary times and yet the head of the Republican party acts as if the problem is with the Republican party and not the press who is covering them.
Republicans need to form grass roots movements in every single state including ones that are solidly blue. We cannot afford to surrender any state anymore but we have to have viable true conservative candidates in the first place especially if they are young, smart and vibrant, or female or members of a minority race. We must show that conservatism knows no race, color or creed boundaries. Besides all that, you have to have a clear concise message that is both positive and meaningful, not lies but sincerity and honesty from the heart and mean what you say and you have to use the Internet to raise money and get your message out to all Americans. This is how you win elections IMHO.
Hey Steele!
The Tea Parties got started on their own.
You’re welcome to tag along and come in for the big win!
!But!, don’t try to take them over......
Everyday I can see scenes from John and Sam Adams life being replayed. In the background I can hear the music from The Glorious Revolution getting louder and louder as FESZILLA becomes more tryanical!
It is coming.
Bring back The Cause!
STOP DISSING PALIN AND LIMBAUGH!!!
