The problem with global warming, some environmentalists believe, is global warming.
The term turns people off, fostering images of shaggy-haired liberals, economic sacrifice and complex scientific disputes, according to extensive polling and focus group sessions conducted by ecoAmerica, a nonprofit environmental marketing and messaging firm in Washington.
Instead of grim warnings about global warming, the firm advises, talk about our deteriorating atmosphere. Drop discussions of carbon dioxide and bring up moving away from the dirty fuels of the past. Dont confuse people with cap and trade; use terms like cap and cash back or pollution reduction refund.
EcoAmerica has been conducting research for the last several years to find new ways to frame environmental issues and so build public support for climate change legislation and other initiatives. A summary of the groups latest findings and recommendations was accidentally sent by e-mail to a number of news organizations by someone who sat in this week on a briefing intended for government officials and environmental leaders.
Asked about the summary, ecoAmericas president and founder, Robert M. Perkowitz, requested that it not be reported until the formal release of the firms full paper later this month, but acknowledged that its wide distribution now made compliance with his request unlikely.
The research directly parallels marketing studies conducted by oil companies, utilities and coal mining concerns that are trying to green their images with consumers and sway public policy.
Environmental issues consistently rate near the bottom of public worry, according to many public opinion polls. A Pew Research Center poll released in January found global warming last among 20 voter concerns; it trailed issues like addressing moral decline and decreasing the influence of lobbyists.

Is it warmer today than average? Proof positive of Global Climate Change.
Is it cooler today than average? Once again, proof positive of Global Climate Change.
Is it wetter, dryer, windier, less windy, cloudier, less cloudy - it doesn't matter. Whatever the weather happens to be anywhere in the world it is proof positive of Global Climate Change.
“War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength.”
They bury it on page A11 of the NY edition, IIRC, but it's on the front page of the national edition. Go figure.
This hoax will never go away. It started out by playing on a normal, cyclical warming period, and coupling that with an emotional hatred of capitalism. When the warming trend reversed, the few geniuses in the movement (those with double digit IQ’s) observed the inescapable reality that global warming isn’t really happening on a long term basis. No problem. They’ve already sold the idea of industry ruining the earth, and the truly faithful aren’t to be that easily deterred. So now it’s just a marketing or, if you will, a semantics problem. The left always avoids dealing with facts, so the core principle needn’t be abandonded in the face of mere reality. Now the mantra will be ‘privately held industry is destroying the earth; we don’t know how, but our belief that it’s happening is absolute’. The frightening thing about lefties is that the less rational their positions get, the more hostile and hysterical they become when they’re challenged.
Speaking of thesauruses, call it envy of free enterprise. Adam Smith, the father of free enterprise, described it as "the system of natural liberty". Capitalism is a term coined later by advocates of communism to imply only the rich with capital benefit. In today's mostly service economy, an enterprising person can start a business by hard work. Major capital is not required to succeed.
The root emotion against free enterprise is envy of other people's resulting wealth and happiness, which develops into hate. The envy should be called out for what it is because it uncovers their motivation and causes shame. Hate is too generic and camouflaged to invoke shame.
You see, don't you, that the latter is directly because of the former? After all, without the support of rationality, what is left for them to do when their positions are rationally demolished?
Instead of grim warnings about global warming, the firm advises, talk about "our deteriorating atmosphere." Drop discussions of carbon dioxide and bring up "moving away from the dirty fuels of the past." Don't confuse people with cap and trade; use terms like "cap and cash back" or "pollution reduction refund."Thanks neverdem.
Whoever first popularized ‘climate change’ struck gold; it can be used to decry those who caused the current ‘warming’ while also serving as a marketing tool to change the climate back to a purported better level.
By changing the climate intentionally we can undo the damage that our ancestors caused us when they so unwittingly endangered us, thus washing away that nasty guilt we feel.
Tell it to the folks at TVA who stored the muck in dirt-lined ponds when the sale of it was unprofitable and now it’s washed all over the landscape.
The Law of Unintended Consequences can’t be denied.
The entire language of the Left is doublespeak.
The banks and mortgage companies forced by ACORN into making subprime loans to people who couldn’t afford them, are called, “Predatory lenders.”
The banks who held or sold off these mortgages as assets that went toxic with the housing meltdown are called, “zombie banks.”
Illegal aliens are called, “undocumented workers.”
I’m sure that there are a whole dictionary of these.
NY Times Corrects 'Global Warming' Claim
Global warming on Free Republic
Leftist propagandists caught in the midst of inventing new Orwellian duckspeak.
War is peace, Freedom is slavery, Ignorance is strength ...
Good grief.
I remember LA in the mid 70’s when on a bad day the air would sting the inside of your nose a little.
