According to the May 30, 2005 Bradbury memo, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was waterboarded 183 times in March 2003 and Abu Zubaydah was waterboarded 83 times in August 2002.
On page 37 of the OLC memo, in a passage discussing the differences between SERE techniques and the torture used with detainees, the memo explains:
The CIA used the waterboard at least 83 times during August 2002″ in the interrogation of Zubaydah. IG Report at 90, and 183 times during March 2003 in the interrogation of KSM, see id. at 91.
Note, the information comes from the CIA IG report which, in the case of Abu Zubaydah, is based on having viewed the torture tapes as well as other materials. So this is presumably a number that was once backed up by video evidence.
183?
That’s all?
One time too few if you ask me.
IS THAT ALL????!!!! SHEESH!!!
They should have drowned him!
Good.
My hearts ableedin’.
hearts=heart’s
Wring all the information out of him. Shoot him when you are done the questioning. He is a waste of skin.
Hmm. I only seem to recall that he had “lasted” the longest of any of them - a total of 18 seconds or something before he started spilling the beans.
And, I assumed it was a “one-shot” deal.
I’ll wait to hear more of this. It would seem to me that after a few times, realizing that it wasn’t going to kill me, that it would not be effective. Although perhaps that doesn’t help much when natural instinct kicks in.
I hope KSM wished he was dead, along with his terrosist buddies. (who were waterboarded 83 times in one month)
the first 180 don’t count, they were just trying to get the smell to go away.
I would bet he was a wrinkly old fart. No sympathy here.
That’s only an average of about 6 times a day. So, figuring they didn’t do it on the Sabbath, figure, 7 times a day, 6 days of the week. And probably only during an 8 hour period, so that’s less than once an hour. So, you get ducked once an hour. Big deal. Considering the guy masterminded the wholesale slaughter of thousands of people he got off easy.
If that many times didn’t kill them then it’s not torture.
cool
I hope he enjoyed it
The five Guantanamo Bay detainees charged over the September 11 attacks have expressed their pride in the killings. In a six-page document, the five men, including self-confessed September 11 mastermind, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, have declared "we are terrorists to the bone". The detainees have been charged with murder and conspiracy, but they say the accusations are "badges of honour, which we carry with pride".
The detainees said their actions were the fulfilment of the Islamic faith. "Therefore, killing you and fighting you, destroying you and terrorising you, responding back to your attacks, are all considered to be great legitimate duty in our religion," the statement said. "These actions are our offerings to God." http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/03/11/2512666.htm
Waterboarded? Not a problem. Good choice for extracting information from unwilling subjects.
I remember being water boarded a eight or ten times or more when I went through SERE school. It creates panic but it doesn’t hurt and when you’re done, there are no after affects except being wet.
Whoever invented it should be given a medal.
You gotta wonder how well it worked if it took that many times.
boo freakin’ hoo
