Notre Dame President Rejects Students' Requests for Dialogue over Obama Scandal

NOTRE DAME, Indiana, April 15, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In a private letter addressed to a coalition of 12 campus groups and organizations, University of Notre Dame president Fr. John Jenkins denied students' requests for dialogue regarding the University's invitation of President Obama to speak and receive an honorary degree at this year's commencement exercises.

Responding to a letter sent to him by representatives of the ND Response coalition on April 7th, the University's president wrote that "conditions for constructive dialogue simply do not exist," and said that students could disregard his earlier invitations to meet with him.

In their letter to Fr. Jenkins, the student leaders of ND Response had expressed hesitancy to accept the parameters of a meeting he outlined in an email to ND Response on March 27th.  President Jenkins had offered to hold a closed-door meeting with 25 members of the coalition.

The student group, however, requested that the meeting be held in a large classroom and open to all members of the coalition groups.

The students also asked that the University affirm its "commitment to defending human life in its most vulnerable stages" before any meeting, outlining some steps the school might take to recuperate and guard its reputation and agenda on life issues.

"These requests were intended to lead the University into making gestures of good-will that would facilitate our productive discussion and demonstrate President Jenkins' genuine interest in transparent dialogue," ND Response spokeswoman Mary Daly said.

Although Jenkins repealed his offer to dialogue, Daly says that "ND Response remains open to true and transparent dialogue with Fr. Jenkins on this issue."

In other words, he has NO INTEREST in conforming to Catholic teaching.

If Catholics pay his salary, it would seem that he is rather arrogant.

As Nortre Dame is a private school, owned by the Catholic Church (unless I am sadly mistaken); this should be an ‘easy’ fix, shouldn’t it? Fire the Dean, appoint another - I’m sure there is a line down the street and round the corner of qualified Catholic applicants.

I would think that if BYU had a president who abandoned LDS principles, his time in a job would be measured in hours, not months.

What arrogance. ND is a sports team. The Pope should smack down this abortion loving academic fraud.

“conditions for constructive dialogue simply do not exist,”

That phrase is right up there with, “mistakes were made.”

I agree with you completely. I’m not sure of the exact procedure for removing the president of Notre Dame.

In other words, they don't agree with him.

The bishop presiding in that area cannot kick out the Dean, but he can rescind the school’s permission to call itself Catholic. That would be a huge loss of cachet for the school.

This is not the only anti-God shenanigans this school has gotten into. They just had a (more or less) gay appreciation week, believe it or not.

What arrogance. ND is a sports team.

They haven't even had a good football team since Lou Holtz left and that was over a decade ago.

The trustees would have to vote him out. This sounds like it would happen when pigs fly.
