I read the article but missed where it said NObama gave orders to provide aid and comfort to the enemy. Interesting. Doesn’t surprise me if true. I’ll keep digging.

Negotiations Break Down in Standoff With Pirates

Negotiations over the American captain taken hostage by Somali pirates broke down on Saturday, according to Somali officials, after American officials insisted that the pirates be arrested and a group of elders representing the pirates refused.

The negotiations broke down hours after the pirates fired on a small United States Navy vessel that had tried to approach the lifeboat not long after sunrise Saturday in the Indian Ocean.

It was the first such approach since the standoff began on Wednesday, and the vessel returned to a nearby Navy destroyer, the Bainbridge, after the pirates fired warning shots in the air, according to an American military official.

The American boat did not return fire and “did not want to escalate the situation,” said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Obama had ordered the Navy to provide food, water and fuel to the lifeboat.

Really? I must have missed that if true. Food and water I can almost understand. But, fuel? ??????

... where did they get the gas?

How about a little deductive reasoning, here?

Triple A doesn't deliver that far out. (pirate) Friendlies were denied access. US Navy is on hand, and no one is likely to ... ah, contribute without their permission.

Does the Obscenity in Chief still carry his Blackberry?

You know, the one he uses to communicate through those really, really back channels. Yeah, the hack-proof one ... that's the one I mean.

With 25.5 feet at waterline and 1.34 x sqrt at waterline that is a cruising speed of 6.7 knots or about 163 nautical miles in 24 hours. The fuel consumption should only be about 1.2 gph with a 3 cylinder 30 hp diesel running in the cruise band.

Somalia won’t arrest the pirates, well isn’t that special.

Let them loose, track them down again and kill them.

Oh I don’t know about that. 24 hours @ 10 mph is 240 miles, depending on the motor, could be done with 30 gallons or so.

When the dog that caught the bus can figure out what to do with it after the chase is over! In other words, Obama doesn't have a damn clue and neither do those around him!

Maybe from Rueters or maybe the AP helicopter dropped some fuel down for them.

Well maybe we did give them the gas. But I just cant believe that. More likely scenario is another ship helped them out since we were keeping our distance.

I have a feeling this is going to end badly, with the captain dead or maimed AND we will lose cred like in Blackhawk down.

The terrorists demanded food, water, fuel and batteries from the Navy after the captain’s failed escape attempt. The Navy confirmed that they delivered the food, water and batteries to continue negotiations so it’s easy to see that they also provided the fuel.

The terrorists even have better negotiators than Obama!

******

On Saturday, a group of Somali elders from Gara’ad, mediating on behalf of the pirates, spoke by satellite phone to American officials, according to Abdul Aziz Aw Mahamoud, a district commissioner in the semiautonomous region of Puntland in northeastern Somalia. The elders proposed a deal in which the pirates would release Captain Phillips, with no ransom paid, and that the pirates would then be allowed to escape.

But Mr. Abdul Aziz said that the Americans insisted that the pirates be handed over to Puntland authorities, and the elders refused. By noon local time, the Americans cut off communications with the elders, he said.

The four pirates, according to the district commissioner, were split between two clans, one from southern Somalia and one from Puntland.

Mr. Abdul Aziz said he had heard reports that when the attack on the Alabama took place, the pirates were coming from another ship that they had hijacked.

The Captain most likely has exposure and with every passing hour he’s in more trouble. If weve wasted time negotiating with tribal “elders” on shore this episode will lead to the sinking of this administration.

the crew was not allowed to leave the ship because the F.B.I. — whose New York office has been charged with investigating the seizure — considered the vessel a crime scene.
