Palin flashback: Michelle Obama says she's from 'real' Chicago

POSTED April 02 2009 8:23 PM BY CARRIE SHEFFIELD

During an address Thursday at a London school, First Lady Michelle Obama told a crowd she was from "the real part of Chicago," echoing controversial comments from Gov. Sarah Palin during the 2008 presidential campaign describing small towns as "the real America."

In remarks before the all-girls school, Mrs. Obama spoke of growing up in urban Chicago, an upbringing she said was an unlikely one for a future First Lady.

"For nothing in my life ever would have predicted that I would be standing here as the first African-American First Lady," Mrs. Obama said, according to press reports. "I was not raised with wealth or resources or any social standing to speak of. I was raised on the South Side of Chicago — that’s the real part of Chicago.”

Mrs. Obama is in Europe this week accompanying President Barack Obama as he attended the G-20 summit in London.

Her comments don't sit well with Republicans, who point also to criticism directed at former Sen. George Allen, Virginia Republican, who stumbled during his 2006 re-election campaign by making a racially-charged remark against a rival campaign worker of Indian descent, to whom Allen said "Welcome to America and the real world of Virginia."

"I was raised on the South Side of Chicago — that’s the real part of Chicago.”

Where "real" is defined by higher crime, more corruption, and a baseball team that has won 1 World Series in the last 90 years rather than 0 in the last 100 years.

She is a nut who thinks that the white kids at Princeton of the early 80s were Klu Kluxers.

She is a freakin liar
She had a very good and stable upbringing
Both parents were at home
. Her brother also got educated and turned out good.
And her father had a great job with the city of Chicago waterworks
A good stable job that any black in Chicago would be very envious of
Her dad was a cog in the Daly machine and that's how he got the job and kept the job

I was thinking the same exact way. She grew up better than many in America. I doubt she went without a thing. In fact, I believe she might have been spoiled.

“Real” Chicago? Is there such a place? To me, its an imaginary land where you make basic wage, go to Cubs games, drink a six-pack after work, vote straight-line Democrat, get robbed twice a year, and attend some local university if you are really lucky.

love your by-line. and don’t forget y’all, somewhere in Her plain-Jane background, Empress Caldonia developed and ENORMOUS appetite for lobster and caviar as an afternoon snack. (Hmmm, is that why the 2 Rino senators from Maine vote for whatever Ogabe wants, to keep Caldonia in lobsters?)

Michelle was born circa 1960.....
Her dad having a hack job was like having it made
Blacks did get crap back then and her dad's job with the city of Chicago was la creme de la creme in the black community. Her dad probably had to help get out the vote and Michelle copied him, working for Richard Daley in some kind of community hack community liaison job.
Then she moved up to her next hack no show job and lot better pay ($330,000) at the University of Chicago.

Like father, like daughter

Hey she was lobster deprived when young since it’s not on the soul food menu. And no insult to soul food, I like collards and turnip greens

Yeah, the rest of Chicago and the entire Metropolitan Area is “FAKE”, right Michelle? Talk about arrogance, and a limited worldview...

I guess the rest of us “Chicagoans” who were lucky enough NOT to grow up in the most dangerous, crime-ridden, poorest parts of Chicago aren’t REAL Chicagoans, eh?

I wish someone would ask her if “White Chicagoans” were “REAL Chicagoans” seeing as the South Side is virtually all “black”. Yes, Michelle, us white folk ain’t that stupid. We can read between the lines as to what you’re saying... What a RACIST!

I was raised on the South Side of Chicago—that’s the real part of Chicago.

So was my father. But when he was there, an evening walk through the "hood" was not an act of suicide. His parents got out as "real" was beginning to set in.

Why is it so “unlikely”?

Name a more appropriate starting place for someone who’ll never have a real job and consider government post after government post a “career” than the:

crowded
failing
high-rise-filled
entitlement-driven
crime-ridden
high-tax
graft-run
gun-banning
50%-dropout
sanctuary-city
catch-and-release
One Party
patronage system
social services mecca
urban gutter.

I wonder how many people get a 300% raise? And what exactly does one do to get a 300% raise? And if one received a 300% raise after one’s spouse was elected to a public office, should not one turn it down due to corruption?

I guess this is “real Chicago.”
