Should President Obama have the power to shut down domestic Internet traffic during a state of emergency?
Senators John Rockefeller (D-W. Va.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) think so. On Wednesday they introduced a bill to establish the Office of the National Cybersecurity Advisor—an arm of the executive branch that would have vast power to monitor and control Internet traffic to protect against threats to critical cyber infrastructure. That broad power is rattling some civil libertarians.
The Cybersecurity Act of 2009 (PDF) gives the president the ability to "declare a cybersecurity emergency" and shut down or limit Internet traffic in any "critical" information network "in the interest of national security." The bill does not define a critical information network or a cybersecurity emergency. That definition would be left to the president.
The bill does not only add to the power of the president. It also grants the Secretary of Commerce "access to all relevant data concerning [critical] networks without regard to any provision of law, regulation, rule, or policy restricting such access." This means he or she can monitor or access any data on private or public networks without regard to privacy laws.

This legislation is a declaration of civil war. Very bad news on the 1st amendment and highly unecessary in any imaginable emergency.
In an emergency communicaton is needed between citizens,not a communication shut down. The government wants to be able to act without knowledge of the electorate. They are OUR servants, not our masters.
This is pure fascism.If we as Americans let it stand, then our Bill of Rights freedoms are doomed.

Is anyone really surprised by this? Of COURSE they want to shut down communications in an “emergency” — so these rest of us ONLY get our news through the “approved” channels. And places like FR cease to exist where we can enlighten each other... Thing is — the government would be stupid to do this, really. Unless their goal is to CREATE chaos and discord, and yeah, I wouldn’t put it past them to WANT that in order to advance their agenda...
Ironic though — even people who DON’T believe in the NWO, Big Brother, and things like that would start to get funny feelings if all of a sudden the President could shut down the internet.

That interview with former KGB guy - Yuri Bezemenov(sp?) — he talked about that exact thing. The folks at “Mother Jones”, DU, HuffPo, etc... Well, I’ve got news for them. When your ‘utopia’ comes, you’ll be right along side all of us in line for the guillotines... They think things will be “wonderful” but have no clue that the governments don’t like people like THEM either! They are all being USED!

US Internet shut down will not effect white house site.This looks like the white house will still have world Internet acess while the US internet is shut down by executive order. Same as shutting down the phone system.
