Sen. Dennis Hollingsworth, the Republicans' new state Senate leader, predicted Thursday that five out of six ballot measures linked to the budget deal will fail at the polls May 19.
Speaking to a Sacramento Press Club luncheon, Hollingsworth, R-Murrieta, also said majority Democrats would have gotten the blame if the recent budget deal had collapsed and driven the state into insolvency.
Hollingsworth took over the Senate GOP caucus in the middle of the night after his colleagues deposed Sen. Dave Cogdill of Modesto. Cogdill had cut the budget deal that included tax increases with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Democrats and Assembly Republican Leader Mike Villines, R-Clovis.
The May 19 ballot propositions are designed to raise money to make the deal work and prevent growth of the budget deficit.
Hollingsworth said he is against one of the key measures Proposition 1A but doesn't intend to spend time campaigning against it.
He predicted enough voters are already upset about tax increases to turn out and defeat the measure.
Proposition 1A would extend increases in sales, vehicle and income taxes up to two years; give the governor the authority to make midyear spending cuts; and try to discourage spending growth by transferring money to the state's "rainy day" fund during healthy fiscal years.

Were basically there anyway.
Only one ballot measure will ever get me to vote again in California. How about the “Honesty in Ballot Measure Titles” measure.
Californians are sick and tired of these initiatives being touted as doing one thing, but they actually do the exact opposite of what they are called.
Either that, or hiding the gargantuan downside of a bill like 1A—which will extend high taxes for 5 years, but is called the “Spending Cap” bill.
This semantic shell game has been played on the populous since I’ve lived here (26 years). The “save the fuzzy puppies” bill will double the amount of Democrats in Sacramento to add more deceptive bills to your ballot.
Why do we allow this?
A B C D E No
F Yes
We Hope five of six will will fail. The sixth we hope will pass is that politicians don’t get a raise automatically any longer.
The five of the six measures deserve to fail and be voted down by California voters and I hope they follow through!
Why? What's the down side? Did he vote to put this piece of crap on the ballot? Does he support the million dollars that the RINO Ron Nehring gave to Schwartzen-traitor gave to the Yes on 1A campaign?
They are turncoats!
He should campaign against it, that’s his job.
Well it would be his job if the GOP had some conservative DNA in it.
I've suggested before that there be a "truth in advertising" requirement for ballot measures. Same thing. It is long past due. As it is now, legislators write what ever they want in the ballot and officials on the campaign trail can say whatever it takes to sell their garbage, no matter what the bill actually does.
Why do we allow this?
We shouldn't.

Meanwhile, the Ron Nehring and the CA GOP will wait a month to *decide* whether to campaign FOR or Against it!

CA: State GOP to consider ballot measures next month [Too Late! and what’s to consider?]
Did you hear John and Ken’s show from yesterday, 3:00 hour? They dissected Nehring’s expense reports. The guy is a big spender, mostly on himself.
The rainy day fund set up in 1A is raided by the teachers unions in 1B.
Dear Senator Hollingsworth,
I read in the Sacramento Bee that you think these propositions will fail.
That is too complacent. You owe it to me and all other taxpayers of California to oppose and campaign against the tax increase and phony spending cap encapsulated in Propositions 1A through 1E. These propositions are sops to the teachers unions and other unions who have a stranglehold on the state government and the taxpayer money they spend.
I would rather see the state go bankrupt and default on its bonds than continue in this ever widening death spiral. Only when we throw off the massive burden created by the public-employee labor unions and their exorbitant pay scales, can we bring this state to fiscal sanity. The contracts for all these entities need to be renegotiated so we can survive this economic downturn. Otherwise, productive taxpayers and companies, squeezed by higher and higher tax rates, will flee to lower tax states such as Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Idaho.
You also need to pressure Ron Nehring to release money to fight Prop 1A. The dishonest tactic of delaying the meeting of the CA GOP until April 18 is a transparent attempt to dodge the issue and avoid angering and confronting the governor after giving him a huge stipend to campaign for these terrible propositions. He is a lame duck. We need to look to the future, not the past. Why did the CA GOP give him a million dollars to SUPPORT 1A? That completely flies in the face of what the GOP stands for: smaller government, lower taxes, and responsible leadership.
Please, do what is right. Fight 1A with all you have.
I am copying this email to John and Ken at KFI radio, Los Angeles.
Respectfully,
[my name]
Dear Senator Hollingsworth,
I write to you today to urge you and other Republican legislators to get active and campaign against Props 1A through 1E. I could give you a long list of reasons, but instead I will save both of us time and just copy the letter sent to you by a colleague and say that I endorse those comments 100%.
(cut and paste your excellent letter)Sincerely, ...
No, I only occasionally listen to J&K.
I was looking at twitter earlier today. Nehring posted this morning — something about the G20 and/or Pelosi.
As the State burns...
The man obviously does not have his head or heart in helping the State, IMO.
You can get the J&K podcast online. It’s really great because there are no commercials and you can rewind. Since they rarely take calls, the timeframe for the show is pretty much irrelevant. FWIW.
How kind Susan Ferriss and the Sacramento Bee are to these tax and spenders.
The people of California were already paying the highest or very nearly the highest level of tax in every category in the United States and they describe the added largest state tax increase in history as "the budget deal that included tax increases".
That would solve most of the budget problem.
