Mt. Redoubt Volcano has finally erupted. At about 10:30 pm, local time. Not much of a blowout, and it's too dark to see anything, but it has finally occurred.

Check the source link for an information page with graphs, warning/alert status, and webcams during daylight hours.

Not that I know of. The Observatory website updates every few minutes, though. Check the link above to find out what they are recommending. Kenai is probably recommending masks and eye protection, no unnecessary driving, etc. I don’t know at this point. Nothing much to worry about here in Wasilla, it’s about 150 miles away.

Just got back from the lava flow from Kilauea...absolutely amazing.

Will be taking a 4 am hike tomorrow (to avoid the Rangers and get a lot closer).

Aloha Night Owl!

Waiting's over.....use a soft cloth to clean your windshield in the morning. Volcanic ash is abrasive.

Been following it....50,000' and ash headed north.

Courtesy of RYAN BIERMA / Alaska Volcano Observatory / USGS.... Alaska Volcano Observatory geologist Ryan Bierma poses near the survey marker for GPS station RREF on the east flank of Mount Redoubt March 18,2009. The volcanic activity at Redoubt rose markedly March 22, AVO staff reported.

Long threatenting Mount Redoubt erupted about 10:38 p.m. Sunday, then again at 11:02 p.m., and 12:14 a.m. today sending an ash cloud an estimated 50,000 feet into the air.

Winds were expected to carry the ash plume north toward the Susitna Valley, possibly missing Anchorage to the east, the National Weather Service said.

“It looks like (Anchorage) might dodge the bullet,” Alaska Volcano Observatory geophysicist Peter Cervelli said.

Observatory staffers notified Federal Aviation Adminiistration officials immediately followiing the eruption.

Whoa!

They were warning about this on the 5 oclock news here in Seattle. Something like 100+ quakes today!

Still trying to find a realtime seismogram station near there, if anybody has a pointer, please let me know!

If you don’t have an army surplus or surgical face mask type thingy, a suitable replacement can be fabricated from coffee filters!

Just be very careful. A high percentage of volcanic ash is actually microscopic glass crystals.

Might make for a very bad hair day.

I just got back on my puter, saw the news, checked out AVO and the ash trajectory, woke up my wife and listened to her scream and moan about this, apparently she has the duty to cover up over all the schools computers every day for the last month when Redoubt started its first rumblings, then AVO dropped the status warning to yellow a few days ago so she put all the covers back in storage.
The school she works at is about 8 miles north of Wasilla, for now it also looks like it may miss us, usually the wind patterns have been more NW right over me just a bit south of Houston.

At least I have spare air filter for the vehicles, if it really gets bad we are sealing up the house and staying put.

use a soft cloth to clean your windshield in the morning. Volcanic ash is abrasive.

Do not clean with a cloth. Just hose it off, or you will be buying a new windshield.
