President Obama said the military was not winning the counter insurgency war in Afghanistan as he opened the door for peace negotiations.
By persuading Iraqi Sunni insurgents to turn on al-Qaeda extremists, US commanders engineered a sharply drop in violence in Iraq.
President Obama said deals similar to those implemented by General David Petraeus in Iraq could be cut in Afghanistan and Pakistan. "If you talk to General Petraeus, I think he would argue that part of the success in Iraq involved reaching out to people that we would consider to be Islamic fundamentalists, but who were willing to work with us because they had been completely alienated by the tactics of al-Qaeda in Iraq."
"There may be some comparable opportunities in Afghanistan and the Pakistani region, but the situation in Afghanistan is, if anything, more complex," he told the New York Times.

The analogy, whether made by Obma or anyone else - Taliban in Afghanistan = Sunni Insurgents in Iraq - is false.
We got the Sunni insurgents to work AGAINST Al Queda.
Who would Obama be asking the Taliban to work AGAINST?
We have already been doing in Afghanistan what would be analogous to what we did in Iraq. We have not obliterated the Afghan war lords; and have been working with them as much as practical, AGAINST the Taliban.
Some have even been named as “governors” by the Afghan government, and locally some remain stronger than the central government in Afghanistan.
And this from a boy who is scared to death to talk to Rush Limbaugh.

I recall that persuasion manifesting itself by enforcing the policy of “if you’re not with us, you’re against us.” Clearly, it was an effective policy.
It’s just like Obama to throw away everything that’s been achieved, and at the same time poke the military in the eye while stabbing them in the back.
Well, all I can say is, he had better not send Hillary for these talks - they’d probably cut off her head since she’s a female who dared go to school. Oh, wait - it will be the MODERATE Taliban - so maybe the’ll be so kind as to offer up a prayer after they cut off her head....
(This isn’t a set up for Hillary bashing - those people are not evolved, and could very well hurt her - and I, for one, would not want that to happen)

He said we'd taken our eye off the ball, neglected Afghanistan.He said Osama bin Laden is there, that he would go get him.
Now he wants to talk to the Taliban.
He jumped at the debate question on the topic of negotiations--yes--his answer was immediate and emphatic.
He would be willing to negotiate without preconditions--
He has had agents communicting with Tehran, Damascus, Hamas--but has insulted and rebuffed traditional ally Great Britain--
He has tried a secret deal with Russia vis-a-vis Iran which the Russians found laughable.
He has bragged he'll slash defense spending.
He has blurted out he's ready to cut ninety percent of our nuclear weapons.
Every statement and action he makes relating to finance and investment causes further destabilization and loss of wealth, loss of jobs.
He is in the left seat with his hands on the controls aiming the plane at a mountain--
Yet he is too debilitated from carousing to perform the duties of the office.
Roosevelt had a reckless disregard for the constitution and his administration was shot through with Soviet agents per Venona decrypts.
But no one suggests Roosevelt meant us to not recover from the depression, to not win the Second World War.
Hussein is further left than Roosevelt, and provides no such assurances of his loyalty.
He is after all not an American by birth, and not a Christian by faith, and is motivated by a visceral hatred of capitalism, of economic freedom, of American exceptionalism.
We are at peril from our POTUS.
Some news outlet actually used the term moderate Taliban.My oxymoron du jour.
