Republican state senators upset with tax increases in the budget proposal agreed to by Republican Sen. Dave Cogdill have voted to remove him as minority leader, Cogdill said early Wednesday.
The Senate's 15 Republican members voted to replace Cogdill with Sen. Dennis Hollingsworth, R-Murietta.
The late-night coup could derail already strained budget talks by requiring Democrats and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to renegotiate with a new Republican leader.
Majority Leader Darrell Steinberg directed lawmakers to begin taking up the budget vote just before 1 a.m.

The State legislature is trying to double our car taxes, raise sales tax to nearly 10%, raise our State income tax, blah, blah, blah. In this economy where do the Dems think we will get the extra money???
Don’t forget that the gas tax is going up by .12 cents, a 26% increase, making it a total of .57 cents!!! a gallon!!!! and people are having to cut back. B*st*rds!!!!!
They also dumped him because he was willing to have secrete meetings with the Dems and leaving the Republican caucus in the dark and out of the loop.
By his actions, Arnold qualifies as their leader, but he is in reality an ally.
An ally? He’s led California into disaster. Who is he allied with?
He is allied with the DEMOCRATS!
JimRob / FR - et’al- Calif. State Budget Impasse Headlines & Articles - Need a game-changer:
YOU / WE need to start writing our own news articles and make our own HEADLINES, itstead of relying on the mee-dee-ah.
What’s the Headline, what’s the story that I see & hear concerning this impasse w/ the CA State budget stalemate?
“One Republican holdout...blah, blah, blah...”
“Vote on state budget stalls - GOP lawmakers block tax hikes in California fiscal plan by just one tally”
“trying again Monday to approve a $42 billion budget-balancing plan state leaders say is needed to stave off fiscal calamity, but they appeared to be one vote short of passage.” ‘ds angrily adjourned proceedings’ - (ap)
FR needs to write new Headlines that “15 / (16?) Republicans Stand Together, Stand Firm in CA Budget Talks”
We need headlines (& articles) that better convey this idea:
“CA GOP ~ “The Democrats Big govt. is the wrong model for govt in CA, needs to be cut.” or, maybe better:
“CA GOP ~ “No Tax Increase to Maintain Big / Expansive Govt.”
“GOP Senators continue their plea to Democrat Leaders: Approve “No new taxes”, & Let’s Get Moving!” / (Let’s ROLL!)
Whatever message it is that the conservatives want to convey, FR needs to start writing the headlines & articles and get them posted here on FR, and maybe distributed across the net. Feed them to the mee~dia.
What is the number of “Democrats” in the Assembly & Senate who need to yield, and CHANGE THEIR Vote for the benefit of the people of California, both now and in the future? The GOP has the realistic and responsible budget that the people and the State of California desperately needs; and it is high time for Democratic members in the State Assembly and Senate to abandon the failed fiscal policies of the past, and truly face up to our fiscal disaster, and vote for the GOP budget proposal ... that will ... ~ ~
That’s the headline & articles we need.
Note to California State Workers - You are NOT losing your job because of “One Republican Holdout”. You are losing your job because of the mess that the Democrats have created in State govt, and in offering you a job that they could not honestly support...~”
FR needs to start writing our own news articles and make our own HEADLINES for this CA Budget.
The whole media focus has been: One Republican holdout... blah, blah, blah... That will be the public focus, especially with the state's layoff of employees.
