President Obama to water down 'Buy American' plan after EU trade war threat

The European Union warned the US yesterday against plunging the world into depression by adopting a planned “Buy American” policy, intensifying fears of a trade war.

The EU threatened to retaliate if the US Congress went ahead with sweeping measures in its $800 billion (£554 billion) stimulus plan to restrict spending to American goods and services.

I know it feels good to keep our fat and overpriced union workers employed but please step back for a moment to consider this. A trade war will do nothing to improve the output of union workers but it will for sure cause the productive workers to get tossed out of a job. Why? Because the competitive industries ship product and services overseas. What are you going to say to these frugal, well managed companies when you destroy their markets?

Protectionism is for losers. The USSR was big on protectionism. How’d that work out?

Michael Savage was beating the protectionist drum today. I thought he was smarter than that.
