Rising equities and a weaker dollar also lent support to oil, which has lost $100 since its record high of over $147 in mid-July on growing fears of slowing world appetite for energy amid a mounting global financial crisis. US light crude for for January delivery rose $1.04 to $47.32 a barrel by 0207 GMT, having risen earlier to $47.41. The contract closed $1.70 lower on Friday after the US Senate failed to pass a bailout for automakers and Goldman Sachs predicted oil could fall to $30. London Brent crude gained 69 cents to $47.10... US Department of Transportation figures showed on Friday US motorists drove 9 billion fewer miles in October than a year earlier, down 3.5 percent... The euro rose to a two-month high against the dollar on Monday, in the wake of recent comments by European Central Bank policymakers that have cast some doubt on how soon the ECB nay lower interest rates again.

We can see from column (4) in the above table that in 2001, each barrel of imported crude oil cost $21.40 on average for that year. But by 2003 the average price of a barrel of crude oil had risen 26.0% to $26.97 per barrel. However, the important point is shown in column (6). Note that the price of crude oil in terms of euros is essentially unchanged throughout this 3-year period.
As the dollar has fallen, the dollar price of crude oil has risen. But the euro price of crude oil remains essentially unchanged throughout this 3-year period. It does not seem logical that this result is pure coincidence. It is more likely the result of purposeful design, namely, that OPEC is mindful of the dollar's decline and increases the dollar price of its crude oil by an amount that offsets the loss in purchasing power OPEC's members would otherwise incur. In short, OPEC is protecting its purchasing power as the dollar declines.

“The contract closed $1.70 lower on Friday after the US Senate failed to pass a bailout for automakers”
Oil price heading towards $25-30 a barrel?Goldman Sachs'... energy equity research team, led by Arjun Murti, said in another report that it is cutting its forecast for 2009 to 45 dollars, from 80 dollars previously, due to global economic slowdown. Murti, who is known as 'oil guru', had shot to fame for rightly predicting a spike in the price to USD 100 when it was trading at around USD 40 level. Later in May, Murti forecast a spike to 150-200 dollars level in the next 6-24 months. In an interview with the stock market weekly Barron's in June, when oil price were hovering at about 135 dollars, Murti had said that oil prices might fall below 75 dollars, but after 20 years. The latest report from Murti's team has, however, said that there was a possibility of prices falling below USD 40 level shortly.

$1.79 across the board (no variance with about 15 stations) in Washington, Pa.
Prices have bounced a little, which has been the pattern here for years (20 cents overnight, slower coming back down). I’ve not paid more than $1.59 a gallon in six weeks or more, but I’ve *seen* the price spike upward into the $1.70s. Mostly they’ve been parked (so to speak) in the $1.60s, but I usually get my gas at Sam’s Club. Most recent fill was last week I believe around $1.57.9. :’)
Low oil prices will help auto sales through January 20, 2009. After that, all bets are off.
