CHICAGO Nearly 100 teens marched outside Chicago police headquarters Thursday night to protest the department''s plans to equip officers with semi-automatic rifles, saying the weapons could make the streets more dangerous.
Carrying signs like "Stop the War on Youth," teens said they didn''t trust police with the high-powered weapons and worried gangs would be encouraged to bolster their own arsenals.
"The only people who need these guns are in Iraq," said Arthur McGraw, 19, an organizer with the nonprofit Southwest Youth Collaborative, which organized the rally. "It''ll shoot through brick, car doors. Say your family is in the house eating and there''s some gang violence. When they shoot these [the bullets] can come into your house and shoot your kids."
Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said Thursday that though police have ordered and received some of the guns, police are not yet using them. Their use will be phased in over the next three years.
In April police Supt. Jody Weis said he wanted to equip all of the department''s officers with the high-powered weapons as part of an overall crime-fighting strategy, arguing that officers are outgunned on the streets. Officers currently carry pistols, and only SWAT officers carry rifles, M4 carbines.
Mayor Richard Daley publicly backed Weis'' plan, saying the rifles would put officers on equal footing with armed gangs and criminals.
What is consistent is that CCW is a no-no.
I think that some individuals are eligible for a CCW permit-retired law enforcement, judges etc., but for the regular Joe, if the thugs are coming after you, you'll need to wait for police assistance, or as some do anyway take care of them with a concealed weapon and hope for the best in courts. A lot of these cases seem to find sympathetic juries and the individual often goes free. Still a huge pain in the arse for exercising a basic RIGHT.
On the surface in most of the state it doesn’t look or sound that bad. A person is allowed to protect themselves and their family without too much concern. Sombody breaks into your house you’re on pretty solid ground if you wax their ass. This isn’t always the case around Shitcago. Seems to me-and I’m just commenting on what I see-that local law enforcement has a lot of latitude in how these matters are handled. What gets you thrown in the slammer in Cook County may not even get you arrested downstate. It just depends-which is BS. There ought to be some consistency in how this stuff is played out.

Use the new guns on the protesters to make sure that they are effective!!!
“My counter was to point out that cops had assault rifles and ask whether the cops read these people their rights before they killed them ?”
Not necessary, they only have to do that to arrest them not kill them.
cops do not read suspects their rights when they are arrested. biggest hollywood myth ever.
I am ore than likely moving to Chicago next Spring...I will be keeping my 2 handguns and my rifle.
I don’t necessarily plan on carrying my pistol around, but my wife may want to carry her .38 from time to time...just wondering what the punishments are, and if I could bring a case (denial of 2a rights) to a Judge.

They had better do it in California or the arrest won’t stick.
1. arrest.
2. interogation regarding the crime for which they have been arrested.
simply arresting someone does not require them knowing their rights about silence if you are not asking them to speak.
but i am sure california has its own rules. do they read Miranda in spanish?
” do they read Miranda in spanish?”
They sure do!
LOL
No, that would be lead bullets making sparks when they hit wood.
BTW, when is a suspect read their rights?
While I certainly want the police to have enough firepower to put these gang thugs down hard, I've known way too many Chicago cops to trust almost any of them with a rifle.
Hell, most of them shouldn't be allowed to possess slingshots...

In Illinois it's a Felony to carry a firearm concealed on ones person
and if I could bring a case (denial of 2a rights) to a Judge.
Feel free. Once the Judge stops laughing at you, he'll give you 2 years in the slammer.
This is Chicago we're talking about.
Do yourself a favor. Move into DuPage, Will, or Lake counties and commute.

Great Briton backs up his point.
M4 — in .223/5.56mm — that is a “hi powered rifle”? Tell that to the M4 that lives with my 7.62s. 30-06s, and .300 magnums, willya...? That will up its self-esteem tremendously... ‘-{
Second mag — “sidesaddled” to the one in the weapon — for quick mag change......
The picture is not the highest resolution. I just don’t see the other magazine.
This is the current thought on how to do it, IF you are going to do it:
She also needs to extend the collapsible stock on that weapon so she doesn’t have to “chickenwing” it or learn to hold it properly - doing that way is an invitation to have a round come in through the armhole of your armor.
