Fact Checking Obama's Infomercial

Posted on 10/30/2008 4:06:51 PM PDT by altsehastiin

Are people going over the stories about the people in Obama's infomercial ala the way the media did to Joe the Plumber?

For example, Obama's first story was about "Larry and Juanita Stewart" of Sardinia, Ohio. Supposedly, they needed to mortgage their home of 10 years to pay for medical bills.

Sardinia's in Brown County, Ohio. A check of their property tax records show no Larry and Juanita Stewart owning property in Sardinia. http://brownauditor.ddti.net/

And a check of the Brown County recorder's website doesn't show a Larry Stewart involved in a transaction, either a purchase or a lien, for property in Sardinia. http://www.landaccess.com/sites/oh/brown/shared/tract/tract_name_results.php

I also can't find recrods for Larry (or Lawrence) or Juanita Stewart in neighboring county websites.

The first one is the house. Doesn't look like a gated community on Google maps, but I don't know the area.

A caller on Rush today noticed the woman had acrylic nails- and asked his wife and other women how much they cost - they have to be maintained and the cheapest place in my little town is 25 bucks for a “fill” and this is every other week- 45-50 for new set. I guess nails are more important than snacks!! What a lame game he has. I was so lame myself I didn't know it was on until it was long over. Guess I didn't miss anything.

The real story with the retired couple is how the run up in property taxes has likely added 200-300 or more in monthly costs to their fixed budgets. Spending and taxation gone out of control - it’s a universal side effect of the “real estate boom.”

One more thing...
Here is an example of one of the houses in the neighborhood.

Pretty typical of newer houses in SW Ohio, but again a little pricier for Brown County which isn’t a wealthy county. People tend to live there and work in Cincy.

Their house for $240,000 probably runs upwards of 3,000 square feet based on some of the other properties listed in the area. I bet they’ll be mad when Obama takes away the tax credit on the mortgage for their “mansion”. (Hey - who needs more than 2,000 sf anyway- right?)

I didn’t see the infomercial, but it sounds like they are having health problems. Whatever $ they might have tied up in their house or neighboring property is not worth much when it comes to paying off hundreds of thousands of dollars of medical bills if they had crummy health insurance.

I agree. I don’t begrudge retirees for living in a nice place and know that medical bills can be awful. He worked for the Railroad according to something I read, so who knows what kind of insurance they had.

That’s my platform. One thing I would do for older adults is make it so that they they are exempt from Property tax after 65. I see too many elderly worry about that twice a year bill when they are truly on fixed incomes. I don’t think that is right.

Yes, I saw that. I don't know how old the photo is, but it seems that it's a pretty new community without a lot of development yet.

Their place looks like the kind of place I would expect in that community. Still, I do have some questions. Their house is completely paid off. Why didn’t they purchase insurance??? Why won’t medicaid pay for some of her Rxs?? He put the floor in himself, good for him. That’s the normal way things are done or at least we pay for stuff and don’t typically complain about it.

What I think about this couple is that they deserve to live in the house they worked for - but their poor planning has gotten them where they are today with no insurance to pay for medical bills. They appear to be typical dems who expect the government to pick up from here.

FWIW, Bryan Johnston of Clay County, MO (North Kansas City) has a federal tax lien on his property.

Obama should pay them for being in his commercial. He has $600 million to spend on his campaign and all he can do is flaunt other people’s misery?

They didn't bother to get health insurance, which is why Barack Obama is going to tax those who can't even afford a home so these people can keep theirs.

Yes, the house was there...the community is being built around it.

Reminded me of a 1950’s TV show called “Queen For a Day”. Four women would spin their tales of woe to a studio audience which would decide the winner. The winner was wrapped in a fur coat, a crown put on her head and handed a large bunch of roses. It was rally creepy to see a shivering creature, with such an unfortunate life, wrapped in ermine and listening to Pomp and Circumstance. The main prize was usually very inappropriate to the winners situation as well.
