A warning Syria's President Assad must heed -- US Special Forces cross into Syria
The Times (UK) ^ | October 27, 2008 | James Hider: Analysis

The US airborne raid into Syrian territory marks the culmination of years of frustration with Damascus’s reluctance to police its own border with Iraq, the main point of entry for foreign jihadists.

Since the 2003 invasion, Syria, fearing that it could be the next target for regime change, has allowed Islamic militants to cross its desert borders freely. Significantly, the village of al-Sukkari farm, which US forces raided, is just over the border from the Iraqi city of al-Qaim, which, since 2003, has been a key funnelling point for jihadists entering Iraq on the so-called rat run to the Sunni cities of Ramadi, Fallujah and, finally, Baghdad.

But a raid into sovereign territory would have needed high-level US clearance and may have been intended as a warning to Syria at a time when America and Israel are trying to turn the regime of President Assad away from Iran and into peace talks.

There are stumps in the desert there...how unusual

Some are pretty big and may require a couple of hundred pounds to do the trick. We want to make sure that the future farmers can handle the stuff safely, by remote control!

The Syrians are praying 5X a day for an Obama victory.

They know he’ll stop this “aggression” on day one.

I think you’re right. To kill the bad guys, smart bombs would have been plenty.

SFs on the ground means snatch to me.

I see this article discusses some of the things I just made points on in other posts on this issue.
The Syrians have no excuse. They did not honor their commitments with our Department of State. Their military is a bunch of bozos to begin with, and if they could not after some five years secure their borders with Iraq then this just proves they are either incompetent and or simply unwilling to cooperate in the least with stabilizing Iraq.
I wish Shell Oil and other companies where not doing business with them. They should be on a stiff economical sanction list.

Barf alert on this one:

IRAQ: Commando raid on Syria raises question of timing

*****************************From the comments***************************

No, the Bush administration is using the attack on Syria as a ploy to raise questions about Obama's international relations capabilities.

You could be right on the mark regarding the possibility that GWB is allowing the raid(s) to take place in order to ratchet up a bit the election results. But how many of the anointed one's admires keep a close watch on these type events. They want change, hope, charity, a chicken in every pot, a Cadillac in every garage, a free house.
