Amid Palin hype, a pro-life feminist's dilemma
The Christian Science Monitor ^ | October 15, 2008 | Angela Kays-Burden

Both the Republican and Democratic parties force me to betray my core values.

Wallkill, N.Y. - I am still not sure about Republican motives behind the choice of Sarah Palin as John McCain's running mate. As I try to sort out the truth and fiction behind the barrage of attacks against Governor Palin (and my confidence in her ability to lead our country), one thing is certain: The 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling made for women during this campaign have not been made for me.

As a social worker who believes that life begins at conception, I am both pro-life and pro-woman. Both parties' platforms force me to betray my core values and choose between the two.

The White House Project, a nonprofit organization, states that support from other women is critical to increasing the number of women in politics. But, in general, feminists have led the attacks on one of their own who is close to shattering the ceiling. To them, Palin's pro-life position alone is proof that she is not fit to lead.

The sabotage of pro-life female leadership by other women is a bipartisan effort. Political action committees – Emily's List for Democrats, and WISH for Republicans – have been established on both sides to advance the careers of female political candidates. Each give money and deliver a bloc of voters to all women interested in running for public office, regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. Only one issue determines whether a woman is worthy of their resources: abortion. The candidate must be pro-choice.

Pro-life feminism is not a contradiction. Conveniently under our progressive radar is the hushed fact that the feminist movement is rooted in pro-life activism. Founders such as Victoria Woodhull, Susan B. Anthony, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were active crusaders both

The so called “feminist” movement is about demographic politics to push the same leftist agenda. It is NOT about advancement of women. Just as certain minority special interest groups will denegrate the success of members of those same minorities when they express conservative positions.

I like this essay but its silly to pretend that the Republic an ticket represents a betrayal.

If anything, the betrayal is the snobby Republican brass who despise Palin as much as any democrat.

Individuals such as Krauthammer and Peggy Noonan come to mind.

The nation is largely galvanized by abortion. Democrats fabricate moral claims they not only do not support but actively undermine— such as racism— in order to compensate with their stated hostility toward unborn children.

Yawn, listen Hamlet I was at your castle last Saturday and it is so 16th century. Why worry about the GOP motives for picking Palin. Just look at the candidates, compare their views to yours and include that Palin is a woman if that is important to you and pick.

No serious thinker needs a lecture that it is ok for a woman to be pro-life regardless of the rest of their views. Heck many of us have actually noticed that most women are suckers for babies. They have a natural inclination to protect babies. That is why it hurts the Dims so much to bow at the feet of radical leftist women.

She thinks the GOP isn’t “pro-woman” because their support of bigger handouts to unmarried mothers is inadequate. At least, that’s what it looks like.

A load of crap. A procedure that makes a mother part of the murder conspiracy of her own child is no more "pro-woan" than rape is. In fact, less so, because at least in rape the woman is always an unwilling victim. Not soin many abortions.

I fully understand her issue, but unless she or someone else comes along with a viable third party alternative, pro-life should trump everything else for a true Christian.

I think Krauthammer’s beef is with her experience level, which I disagree with him on profoundly, but at least it’s not snobbish.

Pro-life feminists of our time include Maya Angelou, the late Benazir Bhutto, and women who have made a powerful social statement by changing their position, including Roe v. Wade's "Jane Roe," Norma McCorvey.

Never knew that about Angelou and Bhutto.

One party condemns abortion but fails to support the brave women who carry through with unplanned pregnancies.

Another load of crap, set in her mind by a bias that sees government support as the only real support. My Congressman, Don Manzullo, and his wife helped found the first crisis pregnancy center in Rockford, IL and here in Freeport. They have not only saved thousands of lives but have helped thousands of young women who've made the right choice.

The laughs just keep on coming. I swear, my sides hurt so much from the unrestrained belly laughs that I can hardly post this. Tell her to stop, she is killing me.

Well, it is true, in the sense that 1800s feminists were pro-life.

I think what women like her need to consider in this election is — which of the candidates do you think would welcome all of your views at the table?

You would have a fighting chance to address the social problems with John McCain.

What chance do the preborn have with an Obama administration?

There's your problem right there. In a nut shell your educational background & professional requirements are in basic conflict with your morals. No wonder you are all twisted up & can't follow a logical argument to a conclusion.

Well said. Thank you! Feminists fail to see they purpetrating the very gender bias they rail against. Where are the plethora of ribbons for testicular cancer, prostate problems, and the like? Little boys are not allowed to express their maleness.

It is really quite absurd to be conflicted over life versus gender. Life always trumps gender. Just ask the mother of a child in who was put to death or suppressed due to gender.
