In fact, Ms. Palin was not in labor, and her doctor thought she had time. So the governor flew to Seattle, continued to Anchorage and then drove to a small hospital near her hometown, Wasilla a journey of at least 10 hours.
She wanted to get back to Alaska to have that baby, said a friend, Curtis Menard. Man, that is one tough lady.
A woman with symptoms like Ms. Palins should be examined to determine her condition, said Dr. Laura Riley of Massachusetts General Hospital. The long trip home could have posed a risk, but the odds were still in her favor that everything would be O.K.," said Dr. Susan E. Gerber of Northwestern University.
When Ms. Palin arrived at the hospital, she was still not in labor, so her doctor induced it, Ms. Bruce said. Trig was born early the next morning, weighing 6 pounds 2 ounces.
But then, those people, and the more than half of the Times news staff who are prejudiced against "breeders" were never going to like her, anyway. With everyone else, this article in the Times, or its reflection in the rest of the media, will HELP the McCain / Palin ticket.
I'm feeling better and better about the odds of a competent outcome in the 2008 election.

Isn't that about the amount of time OHB was a Senator before he started campaigning? Sheesh, even Palin's baby has as much experience as the messiah!
To any critics who say a woman cant think and work and carry a baby at the same time, she said, Id just like to escort that Neanderthal back to the cave.
Now that would have been a good line at the convention directed at the MSM
Trig rocks. I’m totally taken by that little guy. I suspect he’s going to become the adopted son of a couple hundred million Americans as we watch him grow up. Trig’s extended family will be all of us.
Wow. A somewhat decent article from the Times?!
*stares*
Obama is so gangsta’. The NY Times staff must have had its collective head swirled in a toilet by a menacing Community Organizer to put out such an un-editorialized piece like this without any warning.
The Olbermann/Matthews caning was equally intriguing. I’m just waiting for bodies to start turning up...
No wonder they are having financial trouble. [snark!]
Great, now they’ll claim that NYT is, and always, has been a Republican mouthpiece, conveniently dismissing the the other 364 days in a row that they’ve been outright endorsing OHB.
Perhaps, the Times knows that obama is done, and Sarah is now the only story that matters.
It is not a hit piece. Quite sympathetic actually, especially for the NYT.
They also tried to accuse her of being a total workaholic, but couldn’t seem to get anyone around her to back that claim.
She just merges parenthood with work in an unapologetic way.
I hope most women see the potential for a cultural shift on parenting and work if Palin is elected. Not a government mandated one, but a more important change in the way employers look at the productivity of active parents and the boundries of the work environment.
I’ve known lots of people who have to pick up toys when I come in their office too. I’ve always thought it was cool be be able to blend when the work environment allows it.
I don't understand. This is the NYTimes, right? Well, the only possible explanation: the Times staff didn't write this. But the Times still published it. (Perhaps there's a virus attached?)
What a bunch of slime.
The only reason her children are in the spotlight is because the press are focusing on it.
Hillary tried to tie her politics to motherhood all the time - remember “it takes a village to raise a child.”? How about the press orgasming over how great they told us Chelsea was raised?
Nancy Pelosi did her first day as speaker of the House with her grandchildren in her lap. She sat up there and made some bogus speech about how we need more mothers in elected office or some crap.
The American left really sucks.
My only quibble with the article is the use of Ms. instead of Mrs. but that complaint is up to Sarah.
Remarkably different reporting from what we've been getting. I thought we'd have to rely solely on the British press. Hopefully this will calm things down a bit.
The Slimes is claiming she “covered up” her pregnancy? How does that work? More likely she just didn’t talk about it all over the place, like, for example, the Slimes talks about our national security secrets. They wouldn’t understand discretion if it hit them in the face.
Another lie. Hawaii Gov. Lingle was on Fox's special on Gov. Palin Saturday night, and said Gov. Palin was called on at the last minute to give the speech because the designated speaker couldn't make it. Oh, and guess what else the Slimes leaves out: it was an ENERGY conference.
I love the Van Palin/Van Halen part. I can totally imagine her and Todd rocking out to Panama back in the 80s.
This actually was a pretty good article. To me it was a positive article that even corrected some of the myths floating around.
You know when they do it right...they deserve to be told so, because we all know how wrong they get it most of the time.
This was a good one.
